So what do I use my iPAQ for. So what do I use my iPAQ for. One of my favourite features is GPS navigation (Pocket CoPilot via an add on sleeve). This is best explained by my recent trip to Wales from Bournemouth via Dorking (yes, not the most obvious route, but I was picking up my Mum & Dad). I already had My parents address & my brother's address, all I needed to add were the two golf courses & the National Botanical Gardens. The iPAQ with GPS is fully portable with a universal holder & charger. I was directed to Mum & Dad's (yes I know the route, but if ever a jam is detected the planner will give me the option to divert around - automatically), to Wales (M4 all the way!) but we were going to get caught up around Cardiff by significant delays due to the football playoffs. Half hour delays were detected as we came towards cardiff. I pressed the detour button & it informed me that the detour would add 6 miles & 11 minutes to the journey. So off we turned & rejoined the motorway the otherside of Cardiff. Excellent & no fishing around for maps. The GPS package is an add on & available from Clove Technology at the cheapest price I've seen.
Handwriting recognition is fantastic. Bluetooth connectivity excellent. Transreflective screen is a joy to look at in any lighting conditions. Your iPAQ is capable of WiFi connections, ethernet connections, running PCMCIA cards, acting as a phone & running full length presentations all via additional sleeves avaialble from HP.
Watch movies - yes, full length movies on Compact Flash Cards or IBM Micro Drives.
I play golf & intelligolf provides me full golf analysis & if I play a new course, I can either download the course from the extensive database, or add it myself before playing. I get ful statistics that help me analyse where I need to improve the most.
Personal Finances are managed on my iPAQ as is my car & home.
If you are willing to invest some time & money into a PDA then the Pocket PC has come of age in the iPAQ 3970. When Microsoft eventually get round to optimizing their code for the new processors in these HPs then they will positively zip along.
Advantages: Small, Light, Bright and Powerfull Disadvantages: Not Enough Accessories
Compaq's iPAQ H3970 is by far one of the most commonly used PDAs on the market, and for a reason too.
The H3970 has all the gadgets. Bluetooth, an SD expansion slot, Infrared, a 64mb internal memory. It may not seem much, but the SD expansion slot can hold up to 4GB on a card! Bluetooth's range is around 5-10 meters, and can be used to sync your PDA with a computer, transfer data, or do any number of other things. The PDA features a normal headphone ... ...or audio cable.
One thing I did notice, is that the pre-loaded operating system, Windows Mobile 2002, isn't the best in the World. It is slow, and can have loads of errors at times. When upgraded to Windows Mobile 2003, the H3970 peforms extremely well, playing videos with no stutter, lag and yet it improves battery power as well.
The amount of accessories for the H3970 isn't terrific, I'll give you that. However, you can still buy a Compact Flash ...

I got one of these about three months ago and have been using it daily ever since.
The main reason I opted for one of these is the quality and brightness of the screen, it is by far the sharpest one I have seen.
I also wanted the features of pocketpc2002 and at least 64meg of ram.
The 3970 has 64 meg ram, 48 meg rom of which 16 meg is available for storage.
It comes with bluetooth built in which I have been using with a GPRS account on a Sony ... ...it very frequently for realtime stock quotes, emails etc, get good fast access.
The battery life could be better...and as with other ipaqs there is no way of replacing the battery.
It has an SDIO slot so there is opportunity for expansion.
But it does not have a built in CF slot. The other main contender for my money was the Fujitsu Siemens Loox - the reason I chose hte IPAQ was the quality of the screen.

Advantages: Clear screen,great all round system, excellent price. Disadvantages: Doesn't come with windows 2003CE as standard.
...jackets you have to buy for CF cards as these make the unit bulky and cause problems with fitting into the Compaq accessory wallets and cases. I'm still exproting all I can do with my new "toy" and I must say what getting one of these is a must. ...
