Advantages Advantages fairly cheap and easily available

Disadvantages Disadvantages can irritate small animals

When we had hamsters, I used quite a fine sawdust in their cage. As we also had a budgie, I would use sawdust on the bottom of the birdcage instead of newspaper. After a few weeks I noticed that the budgie was shedding lots of little skin flakes. I asked the vet about this when he went in to have his nails clipped and he said that birds shouldn't have sawdust of any kind in the cage as it is an irritant and they breathe it into their lungs. It had been irritating him, and the budgie had been scratching, hence the skin flakes. He also advised me not to use fine sawdust for small animals for the ... more

Advantages Advantages smells, and looks nice

    Disadvantages Disadvantages bit more expensive

Ever tried opening up a bag of compressed sawdust and then trying not to make a mess breaking it up so you can put it in the cage??? I had to put that in because it seems to be a common problem! I’m just glad we now have laminate floors and no carpets, I just use a dustpan and brush now instead of finding the vacuum cleaner. It’s a lot easier, especially when you need to clean hamsters out regularly. There are different types of compressed sawdust, and they also come in different fragrances. They range from lemon, to rose and apple. This looks nicer in the cage (as they are ... more

    Advantages Advantages value for money

    Disadvantages Disadvantages could create allergies

i didn't find this bedding particulary good for my two rats because the dust made them sneeze quite a lot so now i prefer to use just newspaper. It may be better for smaller rodents such as hampster or gerbils. It was however good value for money but not if you have any animals which may be prone to allergies which could result from the dust in the bedding. The rats did however find it quite comfy and liked digging in it but they found it hard to make a proper nest. Prehaps combining two beddings would be the best. ... more

    Advantages Advantages None at all

Disadvantages Disadvantages harmful to small pets

Compressed sawdust is exactly that, dust which has been compressed, its not good for any caged pet in my opinion. With most caged animals it will get into ears and eyes and can cause major irritation, and without knowing the cause it can go undiagnosed until it can prove fatal. Rabbits have a major problem with it, as they will breath in the dust it can cause lung problems. ~~ It is sold because there is a market for it, but all to often pet owners dont realise the risk they could be putting their little furrie friend in. Shavings are the better option,as are barley straw, a little more ... more

    Disadvantages Disadvantages None at all

Gerbils make fantastic pets. They are Very affectionate animals and rarely bite. Unlike hamsters they are Very lively they never seem to sleep. In the past i used to buy hamsters but they always want to sleep and if they're disturbed they tend to bite. When i had my gerbil he used to attract my attension all the time to be played with and let out of the cage. They love to run and jump around and they especially enjoy chewing things. Toilet rolls, hard woods, Nut shells they will chew anything but plastic is bad for them so try and steer clear. Also for a cage they like to have tunnels and ... more
