Manufacturer's product description

Computing Projects In Visual Basic. NET has been written mainly for students of AS/A level Computing 'A' level ICT and Advanced VCE ICT. The book assumes no knowledge of programming and covers everything needed to write a large program. Students on other courses of a similar standard such as BTEC National and first year HND and degree courses should also find the material useful. For AS/A level Computing - depending on the Examining Board computing students may need to produce a small project or write a number of programs for the 'AS' part of the course. For 'A' level a substantial piece of programming may be needed. The theory part of the course covers a number of important programming concepts which are far better learned through practical programming than only through the pages of a textbook. Visual Basic is an excellent modern language through which to learn these concepts. For AVCE students - an optional unit on programming using an event-driven language such as Visual Basic is offered by all the Boards. One of the Boards offers two units.Although the amount of programming is not expected to be as much as an A level student of Computing would do it is still substantial. The object oriented approach to programming is explained and used where applicable.

Christopher Brookmyre's Schooldays
Review of A Tale Etched in Blood and Hard Black Pencil - Christopher Brookmyre by  Olly_Plimsoll

Advantages: Great characters, situations familiar to all of us
Disadvantages: Slightly unsatisfying ending

...I'm not a big fan of crime novels, but with Jasper Fforde and Christopher Brookmyre making such consistently brilliant efforts at subverting the genre, my resistance is being eroded fairly swiftly. Christopher Brookmyre has established a formidable reputation for Scottish crime thrillers. Full of bodily fluids and lurid characters, they're generally hilarious to read, but shot through with such extreme violence that there's no chance of them ever being left in the 'humour' section. A Tale Etched in Blood and Hard Black Pencil is told entirely in the present tense, and follows two linked story strands - the progress through school of a group of Scottish children from their first day right through to their leaving 'dance', and a murder investigation about twenty years later. Brookmyre's previous works have often made a big deal... Read review

If he was made of chocolate, he'd eat himself.
Review of A Snowball in Hell - Christopher Brookmyre by  mogdred1

Advantages: Humour, satirical look at modern celebrity
Disadvantages: None really

..."If he was made of chocolate he'd eat himself" - so Angelique de Xavia says of Simon Darcourt, villian of both " A Big Boy Did It and Ran Away" and "A Snowball in Hell". Brookmyre brings back characters from several earlier works in this novel - Angelique de Xavia, Glasgow policewoman; Simon Darcourt, the egotistical terrorist maniac and Zal Innez, erstwhile bank robber and budding magician. "A Snowball in Hell" is in some ways a vicious indictment of what our society has become. Brookmyre takes the cult of celebrity and takes the piss out of it and its effect on our society. The book switches between the three main characters - Angelique, Zal and Simon. In this fashion we follow Simon on his maniacal celebrity shopping spree as he kidnaps various "celebrities" for his own version of reality TV. This really allows Brookmyre to stick... Read review

This really is BASIC...
Review of Microsoft Visual Basic .NET Standard 2003 Complete package by  ste231191

Advantages: Easy to grasp and easy to use...
Disadvantages: Program bit expensive.

..., and it looks like a load of rubbish to the average computer user, Label1.Caption = "Hey" + Str (Val(Text1.Text) = Val (Text2.Text) Ok, so that's how you program, and visual basic means programming but visually, so u get a blank area that's called a form, and that's all you do is draw shapes, or maybe buttons or whatever your program is going to consist of. That's how it's visual. If you wanted to create a calculator program, then all you have to do is draw what you want on the form, place the buttons and write in your line of code that you wish that button to do. It's that simple, so the only problem really is learning all the codes but that is necessary and will take time. Once you open up the program on the left you have a toolbar and it has the following features; Picture bar = you will insert this and a picture will appear in... Read review
