Filesystem woes with the Conceptronic CHD3NET

Advantages: both USB and Network capability
Disadvantages: only supports FAT32

What an incredible disappointment that the CHD3NET only supports FAT32! It makes it quite useless as a network drive! Updates over the LAN from any filesystem with complex filenames, large file sizes, etc. are next to impossible. Unless Conceptronic updates the firmware and adds support for a modern journaling filesystems such as NTFS or EXT2 or 3, this is a strong argument to stay away from this product. As a USB device, it should be turned on while plugged to the USB port in order to get it to work properly. As an FTP server, it works flawlessly, with Smbmount, I've had considerable difficulty getting it to play nice, but that may be issues with samba or ubuntu rather than the actual device. see http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1031213 for more details. If Conceptronic releases new firmware which supports filesystems ...

SlingMedia's SlingBox SB150-120

Advantages: "Free" TV from the other side of the world... where-ever you are!
Disadvantages: Really none I can think of that concern the device itself

This review is actually based on my use of the Japanese version of this product, SlingMedia's Sling Box SB150-120. The UK model is the SB150-110, and as far as I have been able to establish (from friends actually using it on my advice), the UK model differs from the Japanese model only in respect of the TV Tuner. The UK Model * I am told * features a TV Tuner that is DVB/FreeView capable (which would not work in Japan anyway) and is of course based on the PAL TV system (whereas Japan's model uses NTSC like America). The device itself is smaller than you may expect, and most definitely ugly, but you can't really hold that against it, particularly when there is no reason why it has to be on view (there are no IR remote sensors on the front, for example). It comes with all the cables, software, and instructions you will require ...

Western Digital My book 500GB hard drive

Advantages: small, lots of storage and really reliable
Disadvantages: less portable than a small form hard disk drive, needs main to use

This is my second hard drive. The first one I bought was a sony vaio that I bought off of ebay - a portable 120GB hard disk drive from the far east. It started giving me disk read and write errors about three to four months after I bought it. Moral of the story, buy from a reputable manufacturer and seller. So I bought this from Amazon co uk, who are by far a superior online seller. Prices have come down and i managed to get this for £60 including free delivery. The drive is compact, not portable. It needs to be plugged into mains as well as the computer which makes it less portable, but it is so quiet I can't even hear that is switched on even when it is writing or reading. I would highly recommend this product or even one of the bigger sized ones, though I couldn't afford the 1TB mybook. Remember 500GB is marketing ...
