At 7 years old I was playing connect four with my brother and yesterday, aged 18 I played connect four with my youngest brother and still thoroughly enjoyed it! Connect four has been going for years and is a game of strategy for two players.~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The Game ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The actual game consists of a vertical board made from blue plastic, which has six slots running down through the centre of it where the counters can be dropped. The board has 42 circular holes in it where you can see the counters that have been dropped in through the top. To keep the board standing up there are two blue plastic legs which can be slotted on to each side of the board. Some versions of the game have the legs already attached. Many versions of the game have a flap at the bottom of the board which when in place prevents the counters from dropping out of the bottom, and at the end of the game can be pulled to the side to release all of the counters. Some versions of the game don't have this flap and the counters are removed by tipping the board upside-down. There are 21 red and 21 yellow counters which are circular in shape, slightly textured, a few millimeters thick and when dropped into the top of the board they fit into the circular holes in the board. The game generally comes in a cardboard box which has a plastic insert molded so that the pieces of the game can easily be stored.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ How to Play ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The game is played by two players who take turns in dropping one of their counters (one player has red counters and one has yellow) into the board. The aim of the game is for a player to get four of their counters in a row (either horizontally, vertically or diagonally), before the other player does. The player who gets four counters in a row first is the winner. Players therefore have to strategically plan where they are going to place their counters, as well as watching out for what the other player is doing and trying to prevent them from getting a line of four counters. The game can be played by anyone 7 years and up, although my 5 year old brother plays the game very well and completely understands the concept of how to play.~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Variations ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The version of the game that you are most likely to find in shops is the one I described above, however there are also cheaper, more basic versions of the game which have a much more simplistic board and counters. There are also giant versions of the game available where the board 1.15m in height and the counters are in the form of large thick rings which are dropped into the top of the game. This version is ideal for play settings as there are sticks attached to the board where the counters can be stored when the game isn't being played with. It is also much more robust and solid, as well as being more appealing to children. As with most games, there are various travel versions available (generally these are just mini versions of the regular game). The price of the game varys but the cheapest most simplistic version of the game can be brought for as cheap as £2, the most common version of the game costs just under £8 and the larger versions of the game obviously cost more. The game is such a popular one that it is available in practically every toy shop.
Although the game is quite a simple one, the strategic thinking envolved makes it a very enjoyable one. Having played the game endless times during my childhood, we recently dug the game out for my brother to learn to play. He very quickly understood the rules of the game and it only took a few games before he began to apply strategies. He has tried cheating a few times but he soon realized that no one was going to want to play with him if he did that and therefore he learnt a valuable lesson! Each game can last anything from 5 to 15 minutes depending on how quickly you play and how much strategy you apply! We now keep the box containing the game under the television and quite often grab it to have a game with my brother and of quite a few occasions the adults in the house have a little tournament amongst ourselves! The game is one that you can play a few games in a row without it getting boring which makes it great value for money as it is a game that will last for years.~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Overall ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The game is so nice and simple to set up that it is much more likely to get played that more complex games which take ages to set up and play. The game isn't just based on luck so it makes it an interesting and fun game to play for all ages. Our version of the game has been played millions of times during my lifetime and so it is definitely good value for money and I would fully recommend it for adults and children alike!
It's simplicity itself. It's a game for 2 players and each player has 22 discs in a choice of either red or yellow (we usually toss a coin to see who is what colour). Once the arguments ... ...the wrong word for the Connect 4 game but that's what it's called in the instructions! When you open the game you're faced with a blue box type thing that rattles. Ahhhh, this is the clever bit. Slide the top of the 'box' off and you see all the discs - the top then slots easily into the base and the game is ready to play. If only Monopoly was so easy to set up... oOoOo THE AIM OF THE GAME oOoOo
Connect 4 is a long standing favourite of children across the UK, and I don't doubt the world (although I spent my youth here, and have rarely stepped outside the boundaries of this cold country..). Connect 4 is quite a simple game really, you get a main 'board', which stands upright on two side stands that the manual refers to as 'arms'. The board is see through and has lines going vertically, just waiting for you to put your round pieces in. The game is well worth buying if you've never played it, children love it and it works their minds as they have to try and think at least 2 moves ahead. Its a bit like a simple version of chess if you like. But when you buy it, do yourself a favour - buy the more expensive MB version, ...
...it was then. Connect 4 is a game of skill and concentration but I do warn you it can cause tantrums too lol. It is designed for 2 players 7yrs and up although if you do have a clever 5 year old there is no harm in letting them have a go. Also in the box is 42 counters (21 red and 21 yellow), they are the size of a 10p and also resemble casino chips. Setting up the game is easy just click the grid into the base and separate the counters, decide who is going which colour and most importantly who is going first, this can usually be the cause of the first tantrum. Now the aim of the game is the first player to ...
Advantages: Simple to play, bit of luck and skill needed Disadvantages: None
No this isn't to do with phones but is another old favourite game of mine from those classic game makers MB.
The reason I've been made aware of this game again is thanks to my bloke's father who we recently visited in Yorkshire and who had found it whilst tidying out the attic. He sent it back home with us and we couldn't wait to get it out of the box.
When you open the box there is no surprise to see the instructions for this game on the inside ... ...era. What a godsend these are when so many other games have been abandoned because of a lost sheet of paper. There are also 42 playing discs split into 2 colours, red and yellow. You could be forgiven for thinking this is a gambling game on first look as these pieces look remarkably like chips and with poker being so popular these days in would be easy to be confused.
The playing board is a vertical grid of 6 rows and 7 columns and is held upright ...
useful for each player to have a pencil and paper before you start to play - I would think this was essential if you are adding up scores after each turn.
This is made from bright orange transparent and navy blue plastic and resembles the board that you use for Connect4.
For storage the tiles have to be put in with the curved side upwards otherwise the covers do not shut.
CONNECT4
Sometimes the simplest of games give the most pleasure and after playing Connect4 with my children today I thought that I would review it.
THE GAME ITSELF
The game is made up of red and yellow counters and a simple blue plastic grid. The game is for two players and each player chooses one of the colours. The object of the game is to then slot the counters in the grid (it houses 42 counters as a maximum) at the top (taking turns) and the first player to get four counters in a straight line wins. The line can be horizontal, vertical or diagonal, but the row must be uninterrupted. Of course, whilst you are trying to get your four in a row, you are at the same time trying to block your opponent from achieving the same thing.
What I like most about the game is that very young children can master it (I would say age 4 ...
Connect4 - Advanced
~++++++++++++++++++~
No matter how old you are , you have probably at some time or another played Connect4 by MB games , or a copy version from the many available .
In deed every Xmas you see it advertised on the TV. and placed prominantly on shop displays , such is its popularity .
Part of this popularity is owed due to its ease of play - what could be simpler than taking in turns to place your coloured counters within a 8 * 8 grid , with the aim of getting four counters in a line , be it horizontal , vertical or diagonal.
Now MB games have taken it upon themselves to re-invent the wheel ( so to speak ) , and breathe new life into this old friend , with the release of Connect4 - Advanced.
