~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Connect Four ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
At 7 years old I was playing connect four with my brother and yesterday, aged 18 I played connect four with my youngest brother and still thoroughly enjoyed it! Connect four has been going for years and is a game of strategy for two players.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The Game ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The actual game consists of a vertical board made from blue plastic, which has six slots running down through the centre of it where the counters can be dropped. The board has 42 circular holes in it where you can see the counters that have been dropped in through the top. To keep the board standing up there are two blue plastic legs which can be slotted on to each side of the board. Some versions of the game have the legs already attached. Many versions of the game have a flap at the bottom of the board which when in place prevents the counters from dropping out of the bottom, and at the end of the game can be pulled to the side to release all of the counters. Some versions of the game don't have this flap
and the counters are removed by tipping the board upside-down. There are 21 red and 21 yellow counters which are circular in shape, slightly textured, a few millimeters thick and when dropped into the top of the board they fit into the circular holes in the board. The game generally comes in a cardboard box which has a plastic insert molded so that the pieces of the game can easily be stored.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ How to Play ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The game is played by two players who take turns in dropping one of their counters (one player has red counters and one has yellow) into the board. The aim of the game is for a player to get four of their counters in a row (either horizontally, vertically or diagonally), before the other player does. The player who gets four counters in a row first is the winner. Players therefore have to strategically plan where they are going to place their counters, as well as watching out for what the other player is doing and trying to prevent them from getting a line of four counters. The game can be played by anyone 7 years and up, although my 5 year old brother plays the game very well and completely understands the concept of how to play.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Variations ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The version of the game that you are most likely to find in shops is the one I described above, however there are also cheaper, more basic versions of the game which have a much more simplistic board and counters. There are also giant versions of the game available where the board 1.15m in height and the counters are in the form of large thick rings which are dropped into the top of the game. This version is ideal for play settings as there are sticks attached to the board where the counters can be stored when the game isn't being played with. It is also much more robust and solid, as well as being more appealing to children. As with most games, there are various travel versions available (generally these are just mini versions of the regular game). The price of the game varys but the cheapest most simplistic version of the game can be brought for as cheap as £2, the most common version of the game costs just under £8 and the larger versions of the game obviously cost more. The game is such a popular one that it is available in practically every toy shop.

Although the game is quite a simple one, the strategic thinking envolved makes it a very enjoyable one. Having played the game endless times during my childhood, we recently dug the game out for my brother to learn to play. He very quickly understood the rules of the game and it only took a few games before he began to apply strategies. He has tried cheating a few times but he soon realized that no one was going to want to play with him if he did that and therefore he learnt a valuable lesson! Each game can last anything from 5 to 15 minutes depending on how quickly you play and how much strategy you apply! We now keep the box containing the game under the television and quite often grab it to have a game with my brother and of quite a few occasions the adults in the house have a little tournament amongst ourselves! The game is one that you can play a few games in a row without it getting boring which makes it great value for money as it is a game that will last for years.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Overall ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The game is so nice and simple to set up that it is much more likely to get played that more complex games which take ages to set up and play. The game isn't just based on luck so it makes it an interesting and fun game to play for all ages. Our version of the game has been played millions of times during my lifetime and so it is definitely good value for money and I would fully recommend it for adults and children alike!
Advantages: A timeless classic, less than a fiver, suitable for all the family (and the kids will usually win!) Disadvantages: The noise of the discs can get on your nerves!
