If you believe the blurb on this book when you pick it up from the bookshelf, you are holding in your hands "The Life-Changing Bestseller".
For me, it was actually true.
To give you an idea of my background, I am a 24 year old Irish girl, brought up in a country with 90%+ Catholicism, 2 devout parents and all that goes with that. I do believe there is a god, but have never felt comfortable with the Christian God who suggests, from what I've read in the Bible, to have the idea that the only way to enter into heaven is to be devout to an impossible degree. Oh, and I've never liked the idea that the only "proper" way to come to God if you have done something wrong is to go to a priest and ask him to channel your regrets to God.
I had heard of the book "Conversations with God" almost subconciously. I certainly never remember anyone telling me directly about it or seeing any advertisements for it, but I knew for quite a while of its existence. I looked at it a number of times on amazon.co.uk and toyed with the idea of buying it, but I was always put off by the thought that it may be new age mumbo-jumbo which would only disillusion me further.
I could not have been more wrong. Personally, I have not had a book strike such a chord with me ever. In fact, as soon as I read it through once I went back to the start to begin reading it again.
The author, Neale Donald Walsh, was going through a particulary bad time in his life, and decided to write an angry letter to God and berate him for how his life was going. As soon as he had written the letter, he felt an urge to write further, and he believed God was answering his questions. The book is the result of these "dialogues" with God. It is extremely easy to read, like 2 people speaking, Neale posing the questions and (a non-denominational) God answering.
Please don't immediately switch off after reading the last paragraph. I too understand how difficult it is to expect that this is anything more than one man's effort to get rich from a lot of gullible people. However, right from the first chapter I was struck by the sheer clarity and honesty of what I was reading. Let's put it this way, even if it is not God's opinions being channelled through this book, it certainly contains the blueprint for life which I intend to live by.
The book is split into 14 chapters, however the dialogue flows so well there is almost no need for such breaks. The subjects tackled are amazingly broad - we're talking the real nitty-gritty of our personal belief systems in how to live life. Some of the ideas which spoke to me most strongly are:
- God is unconditional love. No matter WHAT we do he does not turn away from us. Why do we live in constant fear of "upsetting" him?
- Our soul is striving to reach this state of unconditional love. However, too much of our lives are dominated by fear, fear of not being liked, fear of losing our jobs, fear of not being successful enough. We should seek to ensure our actions are motivated by love, and not by fear.
- God does not need us to worship him, or give up anything for him, or to be good for him. He is a deity, "God". By definition he does not require anything from us, so we do not have to beat ourselves up all the time as to whether we are living our lives religiously enough.
- There is no hell with fire and brimstone. If God was ungodly enough to want to keep us from coming to heaven, why would he need to be so mean as to want to torment us for eternity?
- If God really gets so hurt over the little things we do then what kind of God is that?
This is really only the tip of the iceberg in this book, and I probably do it an injustice by even simply taking those ideas out of context and placing them in this op. Among other issues touched are the subjects of have we had past lives and why does God not stop natural disasters.
Even if you read this book and only find one idea in it which strikes a chord in your heart it would be worth it. I have come away from it with a clear wish to live my life to the fullest, with an emphasis on love for others. The usual "Catholic Guilt" which a lot of Catholics carry around has been lifted from my shoulders and I feel a great sense of relief.
There are probably many people out there who would say I'm very gullible for beliving so much of what is written in this book. However, even if it is to be dismissed as clap-trap, please do not dismiss its core idea of actions motivated by love not fear. It is surely not a bad way to live. I'm not the sort of person to go around speaking about my spirituality to all and sundry so I hope you accept at face value that I have been touched (spiritually, not in the head!!) by a good part of what I read in this book.
There are 2 more books in this Trilogy, which I have ordered, but have not yet arrived. Somehow I'm always dubious about a follow up being as good as the first book but I await them with an open mind.
Let me know if you've read this and what you think - I'm not going to be offended and have my optimism ripped to shreds if you've got another view on it!! ;-)
Advantages: Life changing book Disadvantages: None
This book is written around what happened to the author, Neale Donald Walsh, in the spring of 1992. At the time he was suffering from bad health, had been sacked from his work place and his relationships were bad. He wrote an angry letter to God, asking why his life didn't work. Before he had finished the questions, he started receiving answers, and began a " Conversation with God.
The topics ranged widely, and the author discovered that God believed ... ...do with heaven and hell, as we have been brought up to believe. He also found God to have an amazing sense of humor. The theme running all the way through the book demonstrates that our lives don't work simply because we are not listening to what God tells us, as a result we are not able to receive what we want. We are told that our life purpose is to be, or rather experience, "Who we are" Communication from God is always your when you have your ...

Advantages: The most accessible 'religion' in print. Disadvantages: Not left in hotel rooms enough
‘Conversations With God’ is an extraordinary phenomenon. It’s one of those books that people buy for other people, then those people buy it as a gift for other people. I don’t know how many copies I’ve given.
I can tell you that I, and many friends, have found these magical books the most direct, clear, accessible and easy account I’ve ever read.
There are 3 primary books in the original series, with sequels ... ...is that the author, Neale, was at the lowest ebb of his life and decided he would write a letter of complaint to the person in charge, to the management, in other words… to GOD. When he finished his complaining, he was aware of words coming to him that he proceeded to write down. The words grew into a conversation between Neale and God: questions, rebukes, revelations, wisdom, jokes… The text of these conversations, which took place over ...

Advantages: enlight you about life and its meaning Disadvantages: sometimes a bit hard to assimilate, and repetitive
Right. I need to explain a bit about myself first:
I am not a religion fan at all. I am interested in life after death and this kind of stuff, however, my position about God is a bit blurry. I belive in a force or something (I don't know how to explain), but I am definately anti religion. I don't like the idea of it.
This book is not blasphematory in my opinion, but it gives an interesting approach about God and life.
As I don't know what to believe ... ...which seemed to be different. It is a lot less boring than the Bible, and it is a lot less hard to understand (in my opinion nobody understood the holy Book).
Basically, the author was going through a hard period in his life: crap love life, crap job, crap everything.
So one day he just wrote a letter to God to releave his anger, his fears and his concerns. What he didn't expected was a reply. Indeed, the pen continue to write after he was finished, ...

Very interesting and inspirational book I would recommend it to everyone however not everyone might be ready for this book. This book makes you think hard about life and everything in between. It's bascially about a conversation between the author and an energy or 'god'. The author ask's questions to god when he is lost and in need of help.. he gets an answer. This book totally changed my life and changed my perspective on the world and why things ...

feel victimized by you. I question that, though.
Once you know how you feel and what your intentions are, I suggest you share them with somebody close to you because they may not feel you are being compassionate or fair. They can share their feelings and intentions with you and you'll empower each other. If you simply believe you have more knowledge than others do because of your hot line to the third dimension, then other people are more than victims. They are your subjects as you play God.

Hartmann does not have answers, and the same could be said to be true of anyone who reads this book. It raises questions, not answers.
Finally, NealeDonaldWalsch, the author of ?Conversations with God? commented that this book is ?One of the most important books you will ever read in your life?. I agree with him.
