I was actually looking for an A190, but a very nice A170 Classic came up at a local dealer who persuaded me to overcome my prejudice against diesels & try it. I am very pleased that he did! Power is smooth, impressive enough (90bhp on my model) & is acceptably quiet. There was an issue with wind noise around the drivers door, but this was easily fixed under warranty. Dashboard functions, especially the resetting of the ASSYST service intervals are very fiddly.
Although lacking the higher rev punch of an equivalent size petrol engine, the turbo diesel actually encourages a more relaxed drive. In real terms the sacrifice of performance is largely compensated by the excellent economy & low-mid range torque.
