I've never been a good cook but after my friend let me have a go on her Cooking Mama game I had to buy it for myself! Basically, you have to make a dish and at the end you get a grade from cooking mama, depending on how well you make the dish. The grades are Gold, Silver & Bronze with Gold being the best, Bronze the Worst.
Cooking Mama is similar to games such as Wario Ware because of the fact you will be given a short amount of time to complete simple actions which can be anything in Cooking Mama such as slicing, mixing, pressing food , grating & even pouring! All these actions are done with the Stylus by swiping, tapping, or scribbling on the DS screen. When finishing the action, if you finish it perfectly, Cooking Mama will tell you, you are Very Good with a small gold badge underneath it , If you did okay she'll tell you, you did Good with a silver badge underneath it, and if you didn't finish it or do it right, Cooking Mama tells you, you have failed with a bronze badge underneath it. As well as the Very Good, Good and Failed messages, Cooking Mama will say "Just as good as Mama!" if you get Very Good, "Good Job" if you get Good, and "Don't worry, Mama will fix it" if you get Failed. The Grade you get at the very end of the dish depends on how you did on all the other mini games, so if you get all Very Goods you will get gold at the end etc.
In total there are 76 dishes to make from a simple sandwich to a curry , there are lots of different types of dishes such as dumplings and fried rice. Sometimes when you finish a dish you will unlock a new dish until you have all 76.
There is also a type of game where you pick two different dishes and combine them, but to be honest, it's really not that exciting!! In another type of game you can practise the skills used in the mini games, such as cutting, slicing etc.
After a while, Cooking Mama can get repetitive and boring. It also has no progression in it with only unlocking new dishes. If you really wanted, you could finish the game in a day and then not bother playing on it again because you've unlocked all the dishes! The only reason you'd want to make the dishes is to get a better grading. Another disadvantage is that you can't play multi-player which is a shame as it would be much more fun playing against your friends.
Overall I think that if you can find the game at a cheap price buy it, but if it's still at its normal price then to leave it. Chances are you'll get bored of the game quite easily.
