Soft boiling an egg should be easy, just chuck an egg into boiling water for three minutes, or it four? Do you put the eggs into the water when it is cold or wait till it has boiled? Do you boil the eggs straight from the fridge or only when they are at room temperature? It's amazing how flustered such a simple task could make me; every time I fancied a dippy egg and some soldiers I would have to go onto Google and type "how do you soft boil ... ...would get a different answer each time I searched and my eggs either ended up too runny with horrible sloppy whites or rock hard.
I was in Poundland one day and saw the Egg Perfect Colour Changing Egg Timer. It's amazing how flustered such a simple task could make me; every time I fancied a dippy egg and some soldiers I would have to go onto Google and type "how do you soft boil an egg" into the search engine. I'm sure that I would get a different answer each time I searched and my eggs either ended up too runny with horrible sloppy whites or rock hard.
I was in Poundland one day and saw the Egg Perfect Colour Changing Egg Timer. I've spent loads of money on useless kitchen gadgets in the past and wasn't sure if this was going to end up unloved at the back of the cupboard with the rest but with only £1 at stake it was worth a try. You can also buy the egg timer from Amazon or Lakeland where it sells for around £5.
The egg timer looks like a egg shaped paperweight with a flat bottom. If you look inside the dome off the timer you can see a number of lines marking hard, medium or soft. The idea is that when you place it in a pan of water at the same time as the eggs then the red colour recedes and when the white mark reaches how you want your eggs done then you take the egg out of the pan.
This little gadget is worth its weight in gold. It works perfectly although I've discovered the perfect egg for me happens between soft and medium. I've used it with all types of eggs from the small smart priced ones to extra large organic with perfect results every time and it doesn't seem to make a difference if the eggs come from the fridge or at room temperature. I've discovered that if I pop my toast into the toaster when the timer reaches soft then by the time the egg is where I like it my toast pops up and I have a perfectly coordinated breakfast. I'm terrible at eating breakfast because I don't like cereal very much so this little gadget encourages me to get a meal inside me in the morning which can't be a bad thing. It's also great for making hard boiled eggs, previously my method of cooking those was to chuck them in a pan for hours but the timer means that I'm saving energy by not cooking them for longer than I need to.
Because of the simplicity of the timer it is durable, there's no batteries or anything to replace and it simply gets washed and put in the cutlery drawer between uses. I've owned my timer for a few months now and it looks as good as the day I bought it. The only downside is that it can be hard to read the timer properly when it is in a pan of bubbling water but it is easy enough to lift out with a tablespoon to read it and then put it back in the pan.
The Egg Perfect Colour Changing is a fantastic little gadget that has made my life a little bit easier. If you are like me and can't boil an egg then it's the low tech, low cost solution to your problem.
