Ice lollies are a great way of getting kids to "eat" their five a day fruits. I remember making home made ice lollies with my mum so was happy to find these on-line to make ice lollies for my kids in.
These lollies are incredibly easy to make and make a nice dessert time or summertime treat. The set comes with 4 plastic moulds that are all attached to each other. At the top of the mould is the lid which has a stick handle on it. At the other end is the stick that goes into the lolly to hold onto it when the liquid inside has frozen. The lollies are extremely easy to make. You basically pour your lolly flavour of choice into the plastic mould. There is a tiny faint plastic mark showing you how far to fill these moulds up which is fairly near to the top but you do need to leave a bit of room for the liquid to expand when it freezes. Then you put the stick lid into the mould and it fits in place by just making a seal over the plastic mould. You put the lollies in the freezer, wait for them to freeze and voila, you have some homemade ice lollies. I like to make mine with pure orange juice as I find this makes really juicy lollies as opposed to using squash or something like that but you could use other pure fruit juices such as apple, grapefruit etc. I also like to make them with real fruit, blended up so you get a bit of texture in the lollies as well. When it comes time to get the lollies out of the moulds there is a clever little trick to use. The top of the lolly holder will be quite firmly stuck as it freezes really well so in order to loosen the lolly out of the mould I run it under a hot tap for a minute or two to just get enough of the outer lolly to melt and then it will come sliding out of the mould with no problems.
The best part about these lolly makers for me though is that they have a little plastic straw to them at one end too. When you get to the end of the lolly and it has melted quite a bit you will find that you get quite a bit of juice in the bottom of the holder and you can suck this through the straw, my favourite part. The moulds come in four different colours so kids can have a different colour to themselves or you can colour coordinate with the fruit flavours you make to make sure you get the one that you like. At just £5 for the set this is a really nice and inexpensive way to make lollies in the comfort of your own home.
