Cookworks Coffee Machine

Introduction

Me and my husband love coffee, and drink it daily. We used to have a café tier, you know the little glass things which you put ground coffee into and press down? But one day my husband smashed it by accident and so since it’s been instant coffee all round. Two days ago I saw an advertisement for this Cookworks coffee machine from Argos for just £4.99, it said it would make 10-12 cups of coffee, so we decided we would buy one for when the family came down as it would mean we could make a pot for all of us, as if it would make 10 cups of normal sized coffees, it would make around 5 large cups of coffee which is how big our cups are. We weren’t expecting much from a £5 coffee machine, but thought if we got good quality coffee , it would be fine, and then when we did get another café tier, we would be able to use that for me and my husband, and use the coffee machine when we had more people to tend to! So today we went out and bought the machine after reading good reviews of the coffee machine, we thought it would be well worth the £5!
Technical Information
  • The coffee machine is white, but does also come in black (but this is around £8).
  • It holds 1.25 litres of water.
  • Has a permanent filter which can be taken out and cleaned, meaning there is no need to buy filter papers!
  • Has an anti drip device, meaning no hot coffee dripping all over your worktops!
  • Has a hot plate which keeps warm for around an hour after the machine is turned off, meaning you can keep topping up with hot coffee at breakfast time!
  • Has a water level gauge on the side of the water holder at the back of the machine, which shows from one to ten, which as far as I know shows the amount of cups, so you can fill it up to as many “cups” as you want to make, meaning you don’t make more coffee than you need!
Appearance

The machine is very small and compact, with a cute little white glass jug, if you have other white appliances in your kitchen, it will fit right in, we actually have silver appliances, so a silver one would be better, but at £4.99 I am not going to complain! It’s a good looking coffee machine, and although it doesn’t have all the big extras to it, it’s still a fabulous looking machine for the money, I was expecting an old fashioned looking machine something ugly and bulky, something I would want to hide away, but it is actually very good looking.
Ease of Use

The machine is extremely easy to use. Simply take the lid off the back of the machine, and fill a jug with water to fill (this doesn’t come off to fill up which is a bit of a pain!). Then you need to pull open the coffee compartment, this is a little stiff at first, and I was worried I would break it by pulling too hard, but it did eventually open up. Just put the coffee inside (any filter coffee will do to!).

Then make sure the jug is under the machine (with the lid closed), and turn it on. The coffee takes around 5-7 minute to brew a full jug of coffee, as soon as the water has run dry turn the machine off otherwise it will keep on heating up and will break the machine.

You can then remove the jug and pour coffee into cups with milk, sugar etc.

To keep the coffee warm put it back on the machine and the hot plate will keep it warm for an hour or so.

Very simple to use, I didn’t even have to read the instructions to use the machine!
Cleaning

Cleaning the filter is very easy as it comes out without a problem. The only part of the machine which is hard to clean is the water jug at the back of the machine as it doesn’t come out of the machine, it can build up scum, so you do need to buy a bottle cleaner and use that with warm water (no soap) and brush it out, and then fill with water again and run a full jug through without any coffee in it. This is a bit of a pain, but won’t need doing often!

Downsides

The machine claims to make 10-12 cups of coffee, but there is no way it will make that much coffee! We have some small cups which we use for espresso’s which hold around 200ml of water, we can only fill around 5 or 6 of those with coffee from the jug before it runs out. According to the water capacity, it will make 12 100ml cups of coffee, which is only espresso sized cups of coffee, so basically it will make 12 espressos, 6 normal sized coffee’s, and around 3 large coffees (mug sized coffee’s). Which is fine for a couple, but not good for what we bought it for, and we are now going to have to buy 6 small cups to use when we have company!

The cleaning aspect is a downside, and filling up the water jug at the back of the machine. But not impossible to do!

Other than that, it is a great little coffee machine for a great little price!

Overall

This is a fabulous machine which will do us great when we have family around. We are still going to invest in a café tier for use when it is just me and my husband so we’re not wasting a huge jug of coffee! But it is great for if you have a few people at the breakfast table wanting coffee, well if you have small cups that is!
