I got this product on the cover disc of Personal Computer World. I had been wanting a copy of Linux for a long time and thought that this would be my chance to get into Linux.
The installer looked good but took ages to install the program and the progress bar must have stayed at about 90% for an hour before actually allowing me to boot Linux. I had heard that Linux was much quicker than Windows and it amazed me to find it actually took longer to boot than Windows! After getting in I could not find any way of mounting my Hard Drive. I could not use my modem to connect to the internet and as I couldn't mount my Windows HD either I had no way of getting software of the Internet.
The interface was clever but there was no quick way of changing the X Windows Manager which I thought might give me a speed increase. I did not need most of the things running and being a Linux novice, I didn't want to muck up my system.

Advantages: Fantastic - the best thing you could have on a hard drive (apart from maybe half-life!) Disadvantages: software not always compatible
Linux is, in my opinion, windows superior competetor. First of all, and one of the greatest aspects, it is free. I don't mean signing up is free, I mean it is FREE, totally. No cost to you. Being this, it has to be one of the greatest downloads you can ever make. It has open source (this means that anyone can change it to however they want so companies make their own vervios - Corel, Redhat...etc.) so you can pick the one that will suit your needs.
... ...it better, I mean, if it cost the exact same as windows, they would still have users. It comes with a few free games (mostly everything for it is free) like snake, smiletis...etc. And loads of screensavers and backgrounds and whatnot. This will have you playing at it, after installed, for ages. It also usually comes with a word processor similar to Microsoft Word. And other progs and stuff you can use, and you guessed it, it is also free!
The cool ...

Advantages: Easy to install, obtainable for free, good GUI Disadvantages: Common s/w packages used in the workplace are often not available for Linux
I have a installed Coral Linux onto a machine which also has Win95 and NT installed. This was easily achieved by partioning the hard drive into 3 partitions and having one operating system on each. The partitioning was managed by the Coral installation process so it is not a daunting task if you are new to that sort of thing.
The installation of Coral Linux was straight forward and completed in a reasonable time without any errors. The Linux does ... ...Linux which would have been nice to define as, like many people, Linux was not installed to be used day to day, but to investigate what the hype was all about.
The operating system has a graphical user interface so it is easy to navigate and investigate what the operating system contains.
The installation I used came free with a magazine and when installed did not have useful programs installed by default but these are easy to obtain from both ...

Review of Corel Linux
Advantages: Easy to Install, GUI will look familiar for Windows Users, Disadvantages: not really an os for the hardened linux user, feel limited if you are a poweruser.
I installed Corel Linux, after vowing never to, but I wanted to see what all the hype was about. The Install was very simple, graphically orientated, not like many other linux distributions that can be painful to install for someone new to linux. It was just like a Windows95/98 Installation, so no major problems there. Once Installed you have a very nice Graphical User Interface using the KDE Desktop, looks pretty, easy to navigate, shouldn’t give ... ...I would recommend Corel Linux to anyone who is thinking about taking a step into the linux world but isn’t 100% confident that they will be able to cope with the change from Microsoft Products. This is the closest Linux distribution I have seen to Windows, the front-end looks astoundingly similar, which can only be good for getting more people interested in Linux. ...

Advantages: Easy, graphical installation Disadvantages: Not many programs bundled, lack of configuration tools
Corel Linux has received some fairly good reviews, and was marketed as 'Linux for beginners'. Not being much of an expert myself, I tried installing it. The install went OK, with an impressive-looking graphical installation program. But once I actually got into using it, I was rather unimpressed.
Although the supplied KDE window manager was easy to use, I was underwhelmed at the amount and scope of programs provided. It was the basics, and certainly ... ...modem to work, just because Corel can't be bothered to install a program that is, after all, free.
Corel Linux isn't a total failure; it provides the basics and has a fairly good installation procedure. But easy installation isn't everything, and I think most users, like me, will quickly outgrow. So why not start with a more well-equipped distribution, such as Mandrake? ...

of it. CorelLinux just doesn't work on my computer so that went out of the window (quite literally).
As for Mandrake Linux 7.2, I read about it a copy of Personal Computer World, in a Linux Distribution shoot-out (please note that no distributions were hurt in the production of that group-test), and Mandrake came out top. So I decided to pick up the 2-disk GPL version (which means you can get it cheap) which is without manuals, but don't worry there are proper versions with manual and all that stuff and bonus software like Office Suites such as Sun StarOffice, which I hear is quite good.
As for installation, it's quite harmless. If you don't want to fiddle with the hard drive that much, and if you're scared of Linux, then there is a Linux 4 Windows option, that only does minimal fiddling, and it's quite safe, and that's how I ...
Advantages: Cheap, New Experience, Great Product Disadvantages: Not Microsoft
With the upcoming operating system of linux, many users want to give the new OS a whirl. You could download the operating system however this is time consuming and often takes a more technical minded person to actually get a downloaded install working. At the moment SUSE Linux are doing a great deal, when you purchase the SUSE linux product you also get Corel Wordperfect Office 2000.
If you have ever used Microsoft Office 2000 and find is CPU heavy and often lacking very simple tasks then perhaps you should try Corel's new release. The program is a simple install which does not take up much time and also comes with a fantastic hardcopy manual (something that microsoft have begun to leave out). The package comes with all the usual items, word processor, spreadsheet, etc. and is able to read all formats from other well known office ...

WINDOWS vs. LINUX
I use Windows 98 since last year and before that I have used Win 95 and Win 3x. All that time I have tried as a second alternative the following 6 Linux distributions: Suse, Corel, Redhat, Caldera, and this Dos based Phat-Linux and Windows based Winlinux.
I have managed to setup the X-server ( a windows like environment) only in 2 of these distributions! Suse and Phat. All my other attempts where failures. I never managed to setup my hardware properly. There is no "Plug & Play" or "Plug & Pray" (as most people call it), that Winblows have. You are all alone. You have to specify some (or all, it depends on how lucky you are) of your hardware ...
