Your driving along a nice straight road, the weather is nice, maybe a little grey but not raining, and there is definatley no fog anywhere to be seen.......
So can you please tell me why the young man in the Peugeot 306 is hurtling toward me with his sidelights on and worse of all his front FOG LIGHTS???
A friend of mine used to comlain that his fog lights only came on with his full headlight beam (not the main beam, just normal headlights). When I asked him why he needed his fog lights on with just his sidelights anyway he replied 'cos it looks dead cool!' , I just shrugged in disbelief!
What purpose are front fog lights designed for??
Well as the name suggests , they are used in FOGGY conditions, when you cant use main beam, but need the immedeate road in front of you illuminated.
INCORRECT USES :-
To look cool! 98% of other road users dont use these lights to look cool! In fact the 2% that ever do this just cause grief for everyone else, but thats ok isnt it? After all, they cant see thier own lights and therefore dont get blinded!
When its raining!!!! Very bad use of these lights is when its raining, water smears on tour windscreen and causes the intense lights to be refracted into many different angles, therefore making the intense lights even brighter and bigger.
As an extra source of illumination at night! 9 times out of 10 you will forget to turn them off, its ok to dip your headlights, but this doesn't turn your fog lights down and blinds the oncoming drivers.
Rear fog lights are not quite as annoying when used incorrectly, in the case of rear fog lights being on when its not foggy you will find that the driver has forgotten to turn them off! However this is not an excuse, all modern cars have a light illuminated in the dashboard to let you know your fog lights are on.
Rear fogs are also a cause of stress and accidents as they are purposley designed to be very bright, following a car on a busy motorway with its rear fogs on is very distracting, unless of course it is foggy, then its a very useful guide to how far the vehicle is away from you.
I'm not sure how the law stands on the incorrect use of high intensity front fog lights, but there seems to be a growing number of people that use them as fashion accesories for thier cars, this is very dangerous to other road users and also very annoying to everyone else.
Even the highway code states the correct use of fog lights, and to pass a driving test this book has had to have been read, so why do people feel they know better.
The fog lights like I have said earlier are there for one purpose only, and thats for the safety of yourself and the other road users in FOGGY conditions only.
I dunno if it's about looking cool... if it is they're sad. I always thought it was dorks who muddle the icon for rear de mist with the foglight icon and wonder why the window's still steamed up!

I agree with you but I do find the use of any light that dazzles very distracting and at times quite dangerous. Surely there must be some technology/sensors that would only allow the lights to operate when certain conditions are met. Many drivers are unaware of the law and what is said in the Highway Code. I find it most disconcerting to see a car in front of me with rear fog lights on blinding the brake lights and indicators.
