I have been shopping with friends many times to Costco in the States, and have since been itching to go along and get my membership. It was the M25 that was putting me off, but finally I took a trip there today. I promised my boyfriend that we would only be in the store for an hour, boy was I wrong! It took us three hours to make our way around, the whole time ogling the reduced prices and variety of products on offer.
Just to give you an idea of the prices (prices include VAT): - DVD = £14.50 - Large gold framed bevelled mirror = £20.00 - Dyson DC04 Absolute = £200.00 - CK Ladies Jeans = £20.00 - 12 pk. Evian Water = £4.50 - Callaway Great Big Bertha = £150.00
Be aware that the large print price does not include VAT, so remember to always check the price further down the sign in smaller print. Happily many of the fresh food (ie. meat, veg.) products are VAT free.
The shop originated from the States and carries many US brands, as well as the regular brands seen in supermarkets. Many of the items are sold in bulk form within a huge warehouse style shop (similar to Makro). Products available include furniture, tools, clothes, sporting goods, electrical goods, tools, cigarettes, alcohol, toiletries, plants, Christmas decorations, tires, etc.
Unfortunately Costco is a members only type of cash and carry. They provide items with business owners in mind, however I find that the shop caters to individual needs as well. If you are a business owner you will be able to get membership for £24.00.
Individual membership is also available at a cost of just under £30.00. Eligibility is for those employed or retired from: >Banking/Finance >Civil Servant >Education >Fire/Rescue >Local Government >Medical/Health Service >Police Force >Post Office
Or if you’re qualified as: >Optician >Dentist >Pharmacist >Solicitor/Barrister/Magistrate/Advocate >Charted Institute of Marketing Member
If you are unsure whether you qualify I would definitely recommend ringing up to find out, because I did not realise that I qualified until I heard through a friend.
There are 11 Costco’s located throughout England, I visited the one in Watford. It is easy to get to as it’s just off the M25. Other stores are located at Manchester, Leeds, Derby, Aberdeen, Thurrock, Glasgow, Edinburgh, Haydock, Gateshead and Liverpool. Directions can be found on their website (www.costco.com)
The reason behind the cost of membership is that it covers the overheads and allows the prices of goods to be kept at a minimum. It is definitely worth getting membership if you know you will be buying a lot of items. The more you buy the more you save. Also, you can use your membership in any country where there is a Costco.
Because there are only 11 Costcos in England I would investigate to see if one is located near you. If not it may not be worth getting membership.
If you do plan on shopping there be prepared to bring a van or a car with a large boot as you may get carried away while shopping!

You hit the nail on the head with your description. I love Costco at home (in Canada) and think the bulk way to buy is the best for both cost and always having enough of the product! Thanks for the great op -Erin
