Advantages: small, friendly yet efficient staff and service, competitive interest rates, easy to contact own branch directly!! Disadvantages: not many branches (though anyone in Uk can open accounts via post, phone or website you do NOT need to visit the branch)

This is an opinion submitted under "customer/general service-Building societies" based on my experience as a member there for 1 year. I will not discuss the range of financial products in great detail here as these would be best found under "accounts" sub-category)
With the financial year coming to a close (well, it’s hard not to miss all reminders from banks/building societies) I decided it was time to reflect back on the service and account I held at Coventry Building society. About a year ago I was looking for a suitable tax-free savings account to open (e.g. ISA). I did a bit of research using the financial bulletins and saw Coventry sitting pretty high on all the “best buy” tables, without further ado I decided to give them a try.
Contacting Coventry TLC wasn’t too difficult they have both a national helpline number (0845 local call rate) and the telephone number of your local branch, as well as a website. There are approx. 50 Coventry BS (TLC) branches around the Midlands area including the city of Birmingham. You do NOT have to live in the Midlands area to open an account, applications can be sent by post, via the website or telephone(*)
Being a Saturday I opted to call my local branch and expressed my interest in opening an account , I was given an appointment on the same morning. There is absolutely no need to book an appointment to open an account, though I was advised that this would be better as Saturdays tend to busy and this may would avoid queuing. I was greeted by a friendly and knowledgeable member of staff that provided me enough basic information about Coventry Building society, the types of accounts and more specifically about their ISA product.
As a customer my needs were to find out as much information about Coventry Building society, the type of account I was opening and try to get a feel about the level of service that I may expect in return for depositing my money with them.
I could see straight away Coventry’s approach was simple and straightforward ensuring customer satisfaction and service as a priority. I opened a “Mini” Cash ISA account called a “Square Deal ISA” with them after reconfirming my feelings that this was the right product for me at the time. The “Square Deal ISA” is instant access account, with no penalties for withdrawals. Interest rate at time of opening was 6.80%. They also have a Privilege ISA rewarding loyal Coventry Society members with approx. 1% higher interest rate than the normal ISA.
My account was opened immediately, all that was required were 2 forms of identification and because I was opening a tax –free savings account, make sure you remember your National Insurance number (I forgot mine! But somehow managed to re-collect it from memory..don’t know how as I hardly ever see it!) My ISA was opened and I was issued a passbook.
Please note-If you are unsure or have second thoughts after opening an ISA You DO have 14 Days cooling off period- in which time you can cancel.
I had actually cancelled an ISA I opened 3 days earlier with Alliance & Leicester (A&L) why?
a) the service was poor, I had an appointment booked and staff kept me waiting 15 mins, without an apology –as they were late back from their lunch! (that is not putting the customer first!) b) the interest rates on their ISA were poor
Needless to say I cancelled my ISA at A&L as service is important to me.
Another point to remember is once you open a Mini Cash ISA you cannot open another Mini or a Maxi Cash ISA elsewhere in the same financial tax year.
I was also made a member of the Coventry's Building Society which basically allows you to vote at AGM’s etc. To become a member you need to invest £100 as a Saver, however due to the increase in mergers and hopeful windfall hunters I had to sign away any windfalls to Charity.
I have found Coventry TLC to be efficient, friendly and co-operative. Throughout the year, I have only received relevant information about my account or important annual events for members allowing you to vote or have a say. All correspondence included a covering letter addressed to me with the local telephone/fax number of "my" branch, not the national 0845 number.
This is unlike some banks and building societies (e.g. Nationwide, who send you loads of mail e.g., is your Motor, House, Travel Insurance up for renewal,..”) Whenever I want information I go and get it myself by either visiting or phoning the branch, or from its website*.
* Recently Coventry have relauched their website offering even more competitive mortgages and simple FAQ’ s on mortgages. I will definitely be looking into their mortgages as soon as my current fixed rate ends!!(or maybe Coventry TLC will pay my redemption/cancellations charges too?? they are so co-operative that IT really wouldn’t surprise me!)
I'm still with them as they still care.....
*Further details about opening an account at Coventry BS can be obtained from the National customer services phone number: Tel. 0845 7665522
Advantages: Small, very efficient and caring, good interest rates! Disadvantages: Mainly located in the West Mids area.
...if it goes bust! The Coventry certainly meets this criterion.
2. Is it making good annual growth in its money turnover, numbers of members, and its overall net assets rising year-on-year? Again, the Coventry is showing excellent growth.
3. Is it big enough to be trusted with my money, and is it NOT too big, with the result that I become just another member and an account number? I believe the Coventry is just about the perfect size in this respect. ... ...my money? I believe the Coventry comes out brilliantly in this aspect!
5. Are communications easy? Can you talk to branch management easily? Can you telephone the branch or Head Offices without going through abominable call-centres with endless piped music whilst you wait for some semi-robot to tsalk to you? I have always found branches very responsive whether face-to-face, or over the phone.
6. Have they got equitable rates for borrowers and investors? ...

...mortgage broker, was recommended a Coventry Mortgage. Having been with Britannia for years, I was a bit wary of moving to one without a branch within easy reach. I need not have worried. Everything has been as smooth as anyone would wish. If there are any queries, the helpline is answered quiuckly and always sorts things out straight away. Confirmation then follows quickly in the post. Issues that they have resolved for me include changing the date ...

Advantages: A mutual with good customer care Disadvantages: No branches near me
I have a basic internet savings account, and I have been impressed with what I have experienced so far.
The customer service is very good and very prompt.
When I completed an application it was very simple and when I posted documents on a Sunday, they were back in my hand on the Tuesday - so credit to Royal Maill too.
Whenever I have had the need to call I have spoken to a helpful person.
I fund my account by a regular direct debit, tbough due ... ...increase this now - can't remember why and could be wrong. Anyway I also have a cash card that can be used in any LINK ATM which is handy for immediate withdrawals as there is no Scottish branches.
You can also deposit and withdraw via their website, which is simple, but clear and efficient., allowing you to do everything.
Statements for my account is every six months and they too are clear and simple.
Interest can be paid to your account or another ...

Advantages: they were local to us, had a good rate at the time. Disadvantages: debits were never taken on time, staff were not always very helpful
I have had a Coventry Building Society account all of my life. When I was small, they gave you a little blue money box in the shape of a house, and it had a funny silver key, they were brilliant. The interest didn't seem too bad either.
I kept up a savings account with them, and when we were looking around at lenders when we moved house, the best deal at the time was the Coventry Building Society.
We had a debit set up with them on a set day to ... ...forever taking the money too early and this meant that either the money wasn't there yet, or it messed up other debits going out of the account. It gave us no end of trouble.
The statements never seemed to arrive when they should, and the staff never seemed to what to know if you phoned them with a query. I think the most insulting thing was when we took out the mortgage with them, we were sent a free gift over the phone, it was a soft sponge pig ...

Reviews which might be of interest for "Coventry Building Society"
Advantages: Local, convenient, some accounts pay really good rates of interest Disadvantages: Direct debits can bounce even when the money is in the account, low funds charges
I have had a CoventryBuildingSociety account of one sort or another for 30 years (now that ages me!). Yes, I too had one of those little blue plastic house-shaped moneyboxes . They broke easily when you 'accidentally' dropped them. (Who needs keys?)
I've currently got 3 accounts with the Coventry; two MoneyMaker accounts (minimum opening amount is £100) and an Investment Account (which is one of those old discontinued accounts with a naff rate of interest.) I have ATM cards for one of the MoneyMaker accounts and the Investment Account.
I like the Coventry; it's local, convenient, open on Saturday mornings and because it's part of the Link network, I can get money out of my Coventry accounts almost anywhere.
My parents had their mortgage with the Coventry and never had a bad word to say about it. Mind you, my mother is the most ...
Advantages: A long-established major Building Society Disadvantages: Not the best rates of interest and customer service is not first rate.
paid by the CoventryBuildingSociety was about as good as any and as it was a mutual I invested my money.
The Coventry was established in 1884 and describes itself as being one of the top five BuildingSocieties. I suspect this means that they?re number five as I can?t imagine that they?d describe themselves in that way if they were number three. They?ve got almost a million members and are quite aggressive about what they see as the need to retain mutual status.
My initial investment was in a Fixed Rate Bond for three years. The application process was smooth and as uncluttered as is possible given the Society?s need to comply with the current legislation to counter money laundering and the account was opened, by post, within a matter of days. There is a branch network and this is primarily based in the Midlands, but frankly ...
Advantages: excellent customer service, fast efficient service, loyal to customers Disadvantages: nothing yet
We got a CoventryBuildingSociety mortgage 2 1/2 years ago when we bought our first house. They were recommended by our Financial Advisor. From first contact to payout everything went very smoothly. They kept us updated by post all the way. We moved into our house and were very happy. After 2 1/2 years our fixed rate came to an end and due to the big CC (Credit Crunch) and interest rates climbing higher and higher we were extremly worried how we would be able to afford our mortgage when we had to go onto variable rate. But again Coventry came to the rescue. We received a letter that they would like to offer us another fixed mortgage for the same rate!!!! I couldn't believe my eyes and had to read the letter twice. When I spoke to them on the phone I had some extremely helpful and friendly staff on the other end of the phone. Everything ...
