I write this review as a parent of a student, who has been at this university for three years. During this time, I have visited Coventry many times, both to the university, and the city itself. I have gone in shops, museums, parks, fast food outlets, bars, libraries, and many more places. I have spent a long time in traffic, on the ring road, in & out of car parks, and all over the local area. I now feel qualified to comment. I have made up my own list of Specific Criteria, nothing wrong with the one below, just different.
Location - Very good, near city centre, inside ring road. The shops, bars, fast food, buses, are just right. I believe that the location is very important, it has to be near enough to get home at night for one thing. There are a lot of large heavy pieces of course material to be transported, and most students don't run cars. There is a lot of traffic, but once near the campus, everywhere is within walking distance. Coventry, being in the midlands, is away from coastal winds, so the climate is pretty good.
Resources - A wide range of resources appear to be on offer, unfortunately some classes seem to clash, never enough books etc to go round. This is probably not bad planning, just that inevitably some resources are required by several classes at the same time. Some areas are hailed as part of the Uni, but are in fact not available unless you are on the MA route, requiring three years previous study at the Uni.
Facilities - Some are good, but most are of an age not befitting the reputation of the Uni.
Reputation - Although the reputation is good, and indeed the standards high, some students obviously not good enough or suitable for the particular course, seem to get in, worsening the reputation.
Lecturers - These are supposed to be on an International standard, and although this is true, they come from the likes of Austin/Rover, not Ferrari. Most appear very professional, bad apples occur in every barrel though. I do not like "expert" advice from one lecturer being the exact opposite of anothers. They are also difficult to find. I cannot speak too highly of the technicians, these are the unsung heroes of the Uni, and very often save the day for the students.
Costs -Fees are on a par with other Uni's, but seem astronomical to me. The cost of living is average for a city, as always, it is up to individuals to economise when and where possible.
Help - There are facilities whereby students can get help & advice, both in office hours and during "unsocial hours". There is an art in finding out info, much the same as learning at the uni itself. Practical help is limited, and students are forced to ask other students in years above for help, and while this may attract good advice, it equally brings bad.
Course materials - All on offer, either provided or more often for sale. Again, finding the material you need for a certain project is a learning experience itself.
Nitelife - Plenty of it. Close to Pubs, clubs, student's union bar, A student's life is not complete without a social life, it teaches "people skills" and a lot of knowledge can be gathered at the student's bar.
Accomodation - Halls of residence consists of many places, all near Uni. Not the perfect place to be, but compulsary for the first term, then house sharing seems the norm.
Courses available - Seems to be a good choice, compares favourably with most other Uni's. Like others, there may only be one place in the country where a particular course is on offer.
Communication - There does seem to be a lot of occasions when students are not informed, for example cancelled classes. Information is supposed to be sent by e-mail or on the website, however these seem to be permanently 24 hours out of date. I do however, suspect this is a "sign of the times".
Contacts - Here are a list of contacts for more information.

University - waste of time??? I think not, I just want to say that I do like Coventry University, and while there are areas in the city which I recommend as "out of bounds" this is true of any city of this size.
Advantages: Well equipped, organised and funded Uni in a great City Disadvantages: You could proabaly find a more prestigious degree
Coventry University is quite a large and well organised university, with something in the region of 15,000 students. A great many of these are from abroad, which generates a sizeable proportion of the uni's income.
Student services at Cov are excellent - All first year students are guaranteed accomodation, be it in one of the many Halls of residence (some on campus, others further away) or in the university managed but privately owned houses. THese ... ...before. Courses at Coventry range from average to excellent, with anything car related course being among the best in the country. A flexible course structure allows you to take module from courses entirely unrelated to your degree - for example there's nothing to stop a higher maths student spending 2 hours a week learning Russian, or an arts student getting to grips with Object Oriented Programming and getting creditted for it on their degree. ...

When you think of Coventry university, you probably think of crap nightlife, "that hole in the midlands" and other demeaning terms. Well, thats what i used to think!!! but after a severe lack of effort and thus an obvious underachievement in my a-level results, i only just got in, but still....i was in....and the story unfolds.
It seems that the rumours and ideas about Coventry are entirely unfounded, and more to the point un-true. Well this is ... ...lifes all about), then give coventry univesity a thought.
The noghtlife is Really good, even if you get bored/don't enjoy one of the many nightclubs in coventry (eg. Ikon, Planet, Fatty Arbuckles), then Birmingham is just up the road, or London isn't very far. Infact, there are loads of cities within a 1 hour drive which are excellent for clubbin'. Cov also has a large odeon cinema, olympic swimming pool, NEW library!, ice rink, and of course, the ...

Advantages: Some subjects the best in the country Disadvantages: Its not a picturesque place to be
...the only bad review of Coventry so far cannot actually be bothered to check what is written so probably reflects something of the general attitude of the reviewer.
Coventry is not chic or stylish - its set in the centre of the city and you accept it on that basis. The advantages are accessible transport systems, lots of pubs/clubs in stumbling distance and the advantage of being able to get out to the shops between lectures. Some accomodation is ... ...of its componants/design developed by Coventry students - Ford Ka, peugeots, rover etc etc. The allied health courses are amongst the best in the country and if anyone could be bothered to check they would find 23/24 on the QAA rating is something that should not be sniffed at.
There it is Coventry University. May not get lots of research money but depending on your course you'll get the best education available. ...

Advantages: Good Library, Resonable Accomodation, ReziNet Disadvantages: Tutoring, Computing Services
The good bits; Coventry University has got some very good facilities when compared to other uni's, the library especially! Excellent resource for all kinds of books and media, with a 24 hour open access computer room located in the basement for those of you who wish to study/use the internet all night, open 7 days a week! The accomodation is generally quite good, with good sized rooms and resonable support from the accomodation office and housing ... ...yourself rather than to rely on this lot!
Overall Coventry University is not bad for the facilities, however to get a decent degree (although I have heard the the business school is quite good), you might want to look at other universities that have a better record of teaching. ...

Advantages: Good facilities (in Ellen Terry Building) Disadvantages: No real sense of student-ness if not in halls
...I applied for music at Coventry through clearing. No audition, just a wander round with the head of music (which, I'm ashamed to say I did after a lunchtime drinking competition) and I'm in.
I was impressed by the music facilities in the recently refurbished performing arts building. Recording studios, three grand pianos, numerous computers loaded with music software, buckets of rehearsal space. It takes time to make new friends if you're not in ... ...and contact time, and some badly written modules turn what could be a very good university into one that's struggling in the league tables. Overall, Coventry has been better than I expected it to be, and with some improvement on the modules and staff could potentially be far better. ...

Advantages: Interesting, Fun, Useful Disadvantages: non-specific, no trade at end.
I studied this course in the terms in 1996 to 1998. I found the course both enlightening and fun. It covers a vast amount of business areas including operations management, finance, computers, business decision methods, organisationel relationships and many more.
I studied through CoventryUniversity at a franchise college. This college was smaller than Uni, so I did miss out on some of the social aspects, but around it was a positive experience.
I would say that the course is ideal for people not knowing exactly what they want to do, but know it is something in a business capacity ...
Advantages: small, cosy, well located, in Birmingham Disadvantages: In Birmingham
I really, really like Aston university. Graduated from Coventryuniversity three years ago and enjoyed my time there. Aston is a totally different experience. I believe that Aston is one of the smaller universities around and it certainly feels a lot "cosier" (?) than Coventry (which is 3 times bigger). The campus itself is really nice with lots of grass and trees and a lake with a triangular fountain which is really nice in the summer. The Aston campus is an oasis of green in the concrete jungle that is Birmingham city centre (about ten minutes walk away). There are a couple of decent (cheap) bars on campus and with the city centre so close there is always something to do. I'm currently in my second year as an undergraduate at Aston and I'm still having as much fun as when I was a fresher. I would recommend Aston to anyone (if they don ...
Advantages: Excellent buildings, library, teaching staff Disadvantages: Location, enclosed campus environment, local resentment of students
Warwick university has a very nice campus, and one of the best
university libraries I have seen; however its location halfway between Coventry and Leamington Spa means that students living off campus have to travel a lot. Only come here for the courses, the facilities and the teaching not for the nightlife, it is quite apparent that the locals in Coventry are very resentful of students and burglary rate is high. Apart from all that Warwick University does have a very good art centre and language learning facilities which are also available to the public, perhaps over commercialised as a university? ...
