After buying Crash Team Racing, I was still a bit sceptical about the game. I had seen several magazine reviews, which highly rated it, but I thought I had seen it all before. Cartooney graphics, 'cute' characters, tinny music and playability which lasted several hours. So I started off, choosing the main,'Adventure' section, which places you on "N. Sanity Beach", one of several worlds. The aim of the game is to win cups, tokens and relics by completeing various tasks. You must drive around this small area and choose from a selection of tracks to race on. So I chose Roo's Tubes (Roo being a character from Crash Bandicoot). The start comprises of a set of lights, like any other racing game. I was off, speeding past some other competitors and into 5th. Aha, I thought, I've won already. (At this point I would like to add I am a veteran at racing games, not a complete novice.) But rounding a corner, I found a Canonball being stuffed in my face. I crashed and found myself last. D'oh. Finally, back on track, I caught up with the leaders, after much battling and finished 3rd. So I tried again. After several attempts, I won the race, gaining a cup.
This process carried on, for track after track, and Boss after Boss, until I had won the cups. Then I had to win tokens (by collecting letters in the races) and relics (by a kind of Time Trial)
Throughtout the game, there were a couple of things I noticed. The first was the variety and number of tracks. There must be at least 20, ranging from Beaches through Sewers to Castles. Each track has different characteristics, which adds to the gameplay.
Secondly, the opposition Artificial Intelligence (AI) is superb, with each character trying to get past you to win. Finlly is the range of weapons availiable to you, to try and shoot, destroy, blow up and generally scupper you enemies.
Overall, I felt this is an excellent game, well worth shelling your money out for, because it combines all the elements of fun racing into a single game.
