OK, so I may be a bit bias as I have a MuVo2 & not an IPOD, but read on & decide for yourself!
A couple of months ago I started looking for some personal audio that could play hours of music without me having to change CDs or anything (so I didn't have to have an endless supply of CDs in the office). I finally settled on a CD/MP3 player which allowed me to burn any songs I wanted onto a CD (fitting around 170 on a disc). However I only used this for a couple of months as I managed to win this MP3 player through 'Nuts' magazine (please don't call me that!). I have since looked at some prices & it can be found from £150 to £200 depending where you look.
The MuVo2 4GB has the same memory as the apple ipod mini. It weighs the same as a small mobile phone (about 91g) & although it is 15mm wider & 6mm deeper, it is a massive 25mm shorter! This therefore makes it more comfortable in the pocket (more of a square shape than a long, thin rectangle).
Once the software has been installed (allows you to set up folders & playlist other than those already on your PC), it transfers music unbelievably quick, the first time I uploaded some tunes it took just 4min for 286 tracks (thats less than 1 a second). To transfer tracks you simply connect it via a USB cable & then just drag & drop your files via explorer. You don't have to run the tracks through the software first (like i-tunes), just straight onto the player (works in reverse for deleting files aswell).
The MuVo2 can play various formats, MP3 - WMA - WAV - MPEG (audio), & can also be used to transfer all other file formats like .docs .xls .jpeg etc etc (basically its a 4Gb hard disc). The total number of songs you can store depends on the format you use. MP3s take up around twice as much memory, so ideally you should use WMA. I myself have a mixture of WMAs & MP3s & with 403 songs on the player, I am only using 40% of its memory!! At this rate I should easily make the 1000 song mark when full (not that you really need that many, let alone 10,000).
The instruction manual is very simple to use, it isn't packed full of details & instructions, but then you don't really need them. The on screen menus on the player are obvious & easy to navigate using the 'joystick'.
The quality of sound is among the best ive heard with in-ear headphones. The bass is what you would expect, but the top end (especially the vocals) are crystal clear. It also copes well with near max volume, which I regularly use whilst biking through traffic.
The LCD screen is backlit in blue & is full of all the information you need. The folders, which can be accessed in one of the many menus, can be organised into whatever order you want - albums/artists/genres etc. This is simply acheived by creating the required folders on your PC & then transfering them as a whole.
I myself have the player plugged in all day so I cant really comment on the battery life but I believe it is around the 14hr mark.
It comes with a protective case inc. belt clip, & 2 USB 2.0 cables (1 long for normal use, 1 short which attaches to the case for ease of use on the move). It is also possible to buy an in-line remote comtrol for the player which also consists of an FM tuner & voice recorder. This is priced at around £35 from Creative but you can probably find it for aroung £20 on eBay.
To sum up, the MuVo2 & mini IPOD are pretty much identical except for design. The MuVo2 edges out in front though due to its ability to play more than just MP3s. At the end of the day (dang! what a cliche) these are pretty much the only 2 MP3 players avaliable with a 4GB capacity (which is about right for what you need) so it would totally depend on personal choice.
NB/ If anyone is interested, the attached photo was taken by my Samsung E-710 & transferred using infra-red. For more info see my review on the phone!
