Advantages: Great campus, great employabilty rate of course, beautiful city Disadvantages: not for those who are comerically or classical inclined
Let me start by saying that if you want to write songs, this is not the course for you. It is heavily based towards dealing with and understanding pure audio. First year gives you an idea of how much sound matters, from sound design to production. There is some composition involved, but not of a classical or commercial standard. You are pushed to break boundaries and experiment with sound, try things you never would have thought to do. Not all modules ... ...but all will put you in good stead for the world of sound and the music of the avant garde.
Second year really takes it up a notch, heavily into audio theory and synthesis and sampling, one of the highlights of this year is a module devote to create a piece out of nothing but the signal generator and plug ins in pro tools. For the more visual inclined there is also a brief venture into multimedia, using flash and final cut. A few people ... more

First year gives you an idea of how much sound matters, from sound design to production. There is some composition involved, but not of a classical or commercial standard. You are pushed to break boundaries and experiment with sound, try things you never would have thought to do. Not all modules may be relative to you, or your chosen career path, but all will put you in good stead for the world of sound and the music of the avant garde.
A few people having started this module are now hooked on video editing.
Third year is where you truly specialise from production to game audio. This is the year that you will enjoy the most.
There is a high work load and contrary to popular belief it is not a doss course, or easy in any sense of the word. It's hard work but very rewarding.
The course its self is very hard to get on to, with only an average of 25 people in each year, and very male dominated, only two girls in my year. But not one person in my year would wish to be anywhere else doing any other course.
As long as you understand what sort of course you are undertaking, and that is what you are after this will be extremely beneficial to you. If however you want to write and perform music to a broad audience, this is not what you are after.
After reading the other review here, I disagreed so strongly I had to write my own, they obviously didn't realise what they were going in for.
My experience with this course has been fantastic, I have loved every minute of it, even when I thought I didn't (I wasn't joking about the hard part). For those interested in audio, sound design or experimental music there is really no other option than Bath Spa University.
Advantages: A very easy course, easy to achieve a good grade. Disadvantages: You leave university with no real skills and having wasted your time.
Having finished the course I can safely say that the majority of people at this university are stupid so don't go there with the aim of anything approaching a stimulating conversation.
The people on the course tend to be wannabe DJs and people who think themselves the coolest little things on the planet. Looked at from a purely classical perspective (which is most probably the wrong way to) the majority of the students are not real musicians at ... ...the students do have some definite talent for engaging with modern methods and materials.
The course itself is occasionally fun, especailly the first year when you are allowed a lot of free composition and composing for soundtracks etc. But upon entering the second year of the course, there is a real change as the work changes into an entirely non relevant to music direction. Almost everybody on the course complained and complained about all the ...
