It’s coming around to that time of year when parents, brothers, friends and partners are running around shopping centres in the hope of getting you the perfect present. Finding this present is never easy, but when you do find it, the smile on the face of the person receiving the gift makes it all worthwhile.

So this Christmas, when browsing various gift catalogues, I spotted a personal CD player that I fancied, but then my brother suggested an MP3 because it would save me the hassle of carrying a big brick around which needs new batteries after every CD (or seemingly). I told him I could never afford one (imagining they all cost as much as an Ipod). Then this Saturday he paid a visit complete with a tiny little blue and silver thing which looked a bit like a lighter, and awarded me my very early Christmas present.

This was love at first sight! I am, of course, referring to the creative Muvo MP3 player (64mb). This is, as I mentioned barely bigger than a lighter, and about the same weight. It came complete with an installation pack and headphones. It has a detachable memory stick which you simply plug in to your PC’s USB port, and it will pop up as a removable drive (E:). The next step is to simply drag and drop your songs from wherever they’re saved on to the removable drive folder, and voila, you have a highly portable, teeny weeny personal music player.

This is only the 64mb version of the Muvo, although a larger version is available (128mb) for those of us who want to fit more songs on, but I’m quite content with mine. At the moment I have around 20 songs on, which is more than enough for long journeys, long walks, and perfect for joggers, as there’s no chance of the track skipping, and this can go around your neck thanks to the handy little gadget it comes with.

The sound quality of the player is excellent, and even on lower quality MP3’s I still get high quality sound. The earphones included very much do it justice, as well as looking pretty smart too. Another bonus about the Muvo is that it only takes 1 AAA battery, which can last for around 14 hours playback, so if you buy a pack of four, they’ll last you a good few weeks (depending on how much you use it of course).

This can also double as a file transporter, as you can put documents etc on to it, instead of carrying around a floppy disk (handy for students!). It also has a repeat function, which allows you to repeat whole songs, or even sections of songs, which is handy to have.

Overall, even though I’m not much of a gadget person, I absolutely worship the concept of MP3 players. They’re incredibly light, streamline, easy to use, energy saving, cheap to maintain, and you don’t actually have to buy CD’s to play on them. They don’t skip tracks, you can have any combinations of music you like, you can change which tracks you have on whenever you like, and you can have whole albums on it if you like. They are one of the most versatile music players out there. The Muvo is only one example of an MP3, and although not the best out there on the market, it certainly satisfies all of my needs. It’s compact, can store up to 25 songs, goes as loud as my eardrums can handle, and fits perfectly in to any of my handbags, or pockets without looking bulky. This little gadget is a godsend as far as I’m concerned, and would make an ideal gift for teens, students, and those who have to commute, and take incredibly long droning train journeys. It brightens up my day.
