Ryan Coogler delivers a surprisingly entertaining and sort of a 'new age rocky' for today's generation and is able to successfully create this fresh take on the Rocky saga, starring Michael B Jordan and of course the great Sylvester Stallone. This film is a must see.The film takes a new and fresh turn and follows the life of Adonis Creed (Michael B Jordan), son of Apollo Creed struggling to find a place in the world but has a strong passion for boxing and is as mean and aggressive on the streets. Wanting to become a professional boxer himself he moves away from home to Philadelphia to pursue his dream. Here he meets Rocky (Sylvester Stallone), who he immediately gets along with well talking about his father Apollo. Rocky decides to take Adonis under his wing to train him, himself to become the boxer he wants to be, but as Adonis struggles to make it in the industry as people thinks he is just using his father name to make it, he makes a inspirational journey throughout the film to make his mark, become a boxer to show that his legacy is more than just a name.
This film was actually pleasant surprise to me when i went to see it as i wasn't expecting much as i grew up watching and being inspired by the original rocky films and loved them so when i heard they were making a spin-off i wasn't expecting much. However this fresh spin on the story, this fresh new story of a new character in the same world actually worked and made sense and gave young audiences a sort of new age Rocky for their generation. Michael B Jordan's performance as Adonis Creed is actually really good and impressive seen as though he was cast in the horrifying fantastic four reboot which was beyond terrible, he redeemed himself for that in this film. His performance and portrayal of that character was excellent and allowed the audience to feel his pain, struggles and journey throughout the film.Returning and main star of the film Sylvester Stallone in my opinion has give one of his best performances to date in this film as we see a different version of the character Rocky and his struggles and pain and how he deals with them and really allows the audience to sympathize and empathize with his character. This different version of the Rocky we see shows us and emphasizes the fact that this is a new generation and new talent around and he is able to deliver a visually pleasing and overall great performance. Other actors in the film including Tessa Thompson and Phylicia Rashad also give very good performances which add to the films overall view and excellence.
The film went on to be nominated for many awards including a golden globe and even an oscar and even won many awards which it should have. The film had a rough budget of $35 million and went on to make over £100 million so did quite well at the box office and was liked and appreciated by old rocky fans as well as a new audience.
In my opinion this is a must see film and probably one of the best sport films of 2015 including others such as southpaw. the performances are great, cinematography and music fit and is visually pleasing.
