"Rocky returns to form"

The 2015 sports drama film, Creed, is both a spin-off and sequel to the Ricky film series. It features the son of former heavyweight champion boxer, Apollo Creed, as he enters the world of boxing.

Creed follows the life of Adonis "Donnie" Johnson, who is the son of an extramarital lover of former heavyweight champion, Apollo Creed (who appeared in Rocky I-IV). Adonis lives with Creed's widow, Mary Anne, who took him in from a Los Angeles youth facility, where he was serving time, back in 1998, as his biological mother had recently died. Seventeen later, Adonis quits his job and pursues his dream of becoming a professional boxer, despite objections from Mary Anne. Despite being a talented fighter, Adonis struggles to find a trainer, so heads to Philadelphia, in the hope that his father's old friend and rival, Rocky Balboa will train him. Rocky initially declines to train Adonis, but eventually agrees. Adonis also becomes romantically involved with Bianca, a local singer/songwriter. Adonis defeats a local fighter and when it becomes public knowledge that he is the illegitimate son of Apollo Creed, he is contacted by the handlers of world light heavyweight champion Ricky Conlan for a fight. Rocky also faces a health problem, which forces him to face his own mortality. Adonis and Rocky both must face their own battles, as they both support each other and try to win and prove to the world that they are champions.

I thought that this was a really enjoyable film, which is one of the better films in the Rocky series of films. It continues the boxing sags story in a new direction, whilst also staying true to the roots of the Rocky story. It is an exhilarating story, which although a basic story, it is a genuine and inspired film. This film is compelling, uplifting and full of emotion, as you are made to feel for the plight of Adonis and are cheering him on, as he trains and then fights. The fight scenes for the boxing matches are well directed and every punch makes you empathize with Adonis. It is a testament to the performances, that you empathize with the characters so much. This film has many similarities to the first Rocky film, but that is to be expected with an upcoming boxer, in a similar situation to what Rocky was in the first film. The great direction helps to make this film different enough to the first Rocky and a film that is very entertaining to watch, as Adonis takes over the limelight from Rocky Balboa.

Michael B. Jordan is great as Adonis "Donnie" Johnson, the illegitimate son of Apollo Creed, who is talented, but yet still an underdog in the world of boxing. Jordan delivers a strong performance, which I was impressed with. I was also impressed by Sylvester Stallone as Rocky Balboa, former world heavyweight champion and former rival turned friend of Adonis' father, Apollo Creed. it is a moving performance which reminds just how good Stallone is portraying this memorable character. Tessa Thompson also proves to be well cast as Bianca, a singer/songwriter who is Adonis' love interest. This film also features Phylicia Rashad, Tony Bellow, Graham McTavish, Wood Harris and Andre Ward.

In my opinion, this is a brilliant return to form for the Rocky film series and starts off a new story for essentially the next generation of an underdog boxer. This Ryan Coogler film is a entertaining story, great cast and brilliant soundtrack, which makes this essential viewing.
