Crime/detective novel... or farce with a tragic twist?

Advantages: A good read, long, covers a wide range of issues
Disadvantages: For me: the characters and the way the dialogue is written

Although I do like Elizabeth George's novels, I have two main problems when reading, particularly the Inspector Lynley 'mysteries'. First - the characters. Second - the way some of the dialogue is written. But I'll come back to those points. ...
