You thought you were lonely?
Review of Killing for Company (The Case of Dennis Nilsen) - Brian Masters by ellenpants

Advantages: gripping; a comprehensive account
Disadvantages: bit grim; certain amount of postulating

Anyone who hasn't heard about this guy, let me explain- Dennis Nilsen was a civil servant who murdered fifteen men in the eighties, and stuck them under his floorboards. He eventually flushed too many bits down the loo and was caught when tenants in his shared house complained about the drains. Now there is nothing intrisically new in this. Serial killers who hide large numbers of corpses are, unfortunately, not an unknown phenomenon. The interesting ...
...this book gives a truly fascinating grounding in the makings of a monster. Brian Masters has been familier to Nilsen for many years, and was in fact forced to lend him a tie to wear at his trial (Nilsen didn't have one- he'd used them all up strangling people). He quotes the killer himself quite often, lending weight to his hypotheses. The basic jist is that, after the death of Nilsen's beloved grandfather, he became enmeshed with the concept of ... A Most Gruesome Journey
Review of The Shrine of Jeffrey Dahmer - Brian Masters by Salgirl

Advantages: Sympathetically factual
Disadvantages: The murders are extremely vile

...a real cannibal... Jeffrey Dhamer, The world. The world, this is Jeffrey Dahmer. Imagine a hot summer's night in July, 1991. You are a policeman and you've just walked in to a Mr. Dahmer's apartment. The occupant is a young man, dishevelled, not unpleasant looking and he's calm about things. So calm that he's not bothered to tidy up properly. There are mind-numbing photographs, a severed head in the fridge, two more in the deep freeze, a skeleton ...
...marriage had been rocky from the start, and when they divorced some years later, neither of them wanted custody of him. It wasn't that they didn't care as such, but Jeffrey was 18, they had other children to consider. Had they known of the sick fantasy world he was already living in, they would never have left him alone. This was a man fascinated with necrophilia. Even at this young age, his urges were brimming up to the point of taking action, ... Read review

the complexities of social work law in a book
Review of Vernon: Social Work and the Law - Stuart Vernon by mad4itness

Advantages: easy to read
Disadvantages: none

Although the need for specific texts increased as the course progressed, this book has been of great use to my studies. Even in my fourth year placement this book gave gave me an overview of specific themes, and the bibliography provided me with relevant further reading, which is something my class-mates have struggled in finding thriughout the course. I would highly recommend this book to any social work student, prospective student, or indeed anyone ... Read review

Guv'nor should Govern your reading
Review of The Guv'nor - Lenny McLean by iamasadlittleboy

Advantages: Great insights
Disadvantages: Feels incomplete

After staring the excellent book on Paul Briggs I forgot to bring it with me on what I'll describe as my run-away-get-away so I needed aothr similar book, and I'd heard nothing but good things about this 'un. You may wonder why I mentioned Briggy's name well to be honest the books, and the lifestyles of the two are similar, yet opposite at the same time. For example both were beaten as kids, Briggs by his father, Lenny by his step father, both beat ...
...Lenny was ment to be the "'ardest man in britain"...for those of you who were/are Kimbo Slice fans he's basically doing what Lenny made a career out of (Kimbo's new role in MMA aside). Minding and street fighting, claiming to have had over 3000 fights, a number wich I'm sure is maybe trippled of actual "fights" as opposed to scuffles (i.e. kicking a group out of the club your working at doesn't count as 5 fights as far as I'm concerned). Lenny's ... Read review
