This classic Russian novel was first published in serial form and later published as a novel. The murder of a pawnbroker and her sister becomes the main plot of the novel. A poor...

A simple murder plot would not make this novel a classic, but when your add a list of complex characters and commentaries on family, alcoholism, revolutionary activity, atheism, and socialism the value of this work is established.

Russian anecdote in style of black humour: "Dostoevsky takes a walk in Petersburg and meets Raskolnikoff with a bloody axe in his hand. Dostoevsky: "Dear God, Rodion, how could you kill that granny for only ten kopecks?!" Raskolnikoff: "Hey, ten grannies make a rouble!"

Large, cold city of st. Petersburg full of mist, injustice, rich and poor people presses on minds of its inhabitants. A poor, miserable student Rodion Raskolnikoff lives here, realises his miserability and sees other, rich, but worthless people who are not going to do any good for this world, but collect their money and even hope for eternal life on heaven after death. Seeing all that, Raskolnikoff decides that people are sheep, and only that who will treat them so, who will do anything to reach his point, will be a great man. He decides to prove himself that he can do something that other people - sheep - cannot do - to kill someone and chooses an old women moneylender as his victim. Her life is truly worthless – she is a rich greedy suspicious old bag, who is going to die soon, but counting every kopeck planning to get a warm place on heaven with donating her money to monastery then she dies. Raskolnikoff kills her, but he also has to kill old woman's sister, who occasionally appears there. He didn't feel like super-human after that. It appeared that he can't deal with his conscience as easily as with his victims and experiences moral tortures. He realises, that one can't raise himself over the crowd on the bones of other people, even if he believes that their lives are useless. Then Raskolnikoff gets caught he feels relief and his true love - young girl, who had to become a prostitute to feed her mother, follows him to Siberia.

Soviet government didn’t like Dostoevsky much, because he didn’t believe, that life can be changed to better with force, he was against violence, against war and bloody revolutions.
