Advantages Advantages Gets criminals behind bars, seeks to reassure the public

Disadvantages Disadvantages Could be accused of not covering enough crimes

I have always been fascinated by Crimewatch, and I suspect the same can be said of its other six million regular viewers. Since June 1984 the BBC has brought us a monthly dose of 'reality television' at its most unattractive, usually transmitted midweek at 9.30pm in order to catch the optimum audience figures. Usually there are four or five main appeals into murders, abductions, rapes, violent attacks and robberies. These main appeals occur when the culprit is unknown, and usually consist of a reconstruction which is filmed by the BBC using witness statements to recreate the accuracy of the ... more

A programme that comes on once a month and scares the living daylights out of me, but somewhere there is the nagging thought that I've missed out, hence me watching behind the safety of a pillow! I can't admit to having been an avid watcher from the offset - way back in 1984 I would have been the grand old age of 5, and therefore not of an age to watch. Just in case there are some folks who don't know about this programme - the idea behind it was an inspiration from various programmes already being aired in the UK, America and Germany. With these shows, there were elements that were not to the ... more

Advantages Advantages chance to play detectives

Disadvantages Disadvantages none unless you happen to be a presenter (Jill Dando ring any bells?)

Crimewatch UK has been going forever and is basically a way for the police to enlist the general (crimewatch viewing) public to help them to solve crimes. These are often long running cases that the police have no leads for and putting them on television is a last ditch attempt to solve them. Particularly shocking and violent crimes are also featured along with robberies and other crimes where the perpetrators have been caught on CCTV. The basic formula is that the presenters will introduce the case that is to be solved, then a reconstruction is staged or photofit shown, followed by a police ... more

Advantages Advantages Great show, well presented, helping to rid our streets of awful offenders.

Disadvantages Disadvantages Some of the reconstructions are very upsetting and it's because they're all true :(

Crimewatch UK is a BBC programme which is on roughly once a month and aims to bring light to the public criminals who are wanted and crimes that have been committed as well as making people aware again of events that may have happened a number of years ago and where the culprits have still not been found. There have been a number of presenters over the years and one of them was Jill Dando who was murdered outside her home. Crimewatch had a reconstruction and eventually her killer was found and imprisoned. A number of crimes are covered on Crimewatch such as murder, rape, theft, burglary ... more

CrimeWatch is a programme that asks the viewers for their help in solving crimes, the programme highlights the problems we still have in society, with old women being mugged, people being killed. However, for the victim’s family, it’s a chance to see the culprit behind bars. They usually reconstruct a crime, and at the end have a photo fit, which may look like the person wanted. Then viewers can phone an anonymous number to give some useful information they may think is relevant to the case. Viewers have solved many crimes, so it is useful in that way, because when people see the ... more
