Never played Final Fantasy VII? No problem. Although this is a prequel to the classic PS2 role-player, loaded with fan-pleasing references, its also an engaging standalone adventure.

And its massive, with a huge main story battling a rouge super soldier and his army of mutant clones - thats bolstered by over 100 side missions, like treasure hunting or helping a cowardly soldier get promoted.

Like Final Fantasy XII, combat is almost real time. You run, dodge and block instantly while attacks and spells have a short delay - the stronger the moves the longer it takes.

Special skills are gained by equipping Materia Crystals, found by defeating enemis or exploring. It's a deep system, and you can create new abilities by fusing materia, spending hours experiment with combinations.

It's a shame, though, that you cant make changes during battles. Particularly if you find yourself using the wrong setup against a powerful opponent. A new combat feature is the digital mind wave: a fruit machine like system of reels that grant magic attacks or special moves.

You're utterly t its randomized mercy. It might, helpfully, unleash an apocalypse on a tricky boss or, less helpfully, give you a massively pointless health boost against a handful of harmless monster parsnips.

Combat also wears thin hanks to our old friend random battle. The problem is exacerbated by the use of linear level design - it can feel like you're simply trudging between endless battles.

But despite these annoyances, the story is charming and enjoyable; laden with melodrama and emotion regardless of your attachment to the original. Its also exceptionally pretty, both in-game and during the extravagant FMV sequences. A worthy addition to anyones psp library.

This has not yet been released ive played the import so the british release is 20th june
