Cristie Hard drive 30 GB

Advantages: Very fast
Disadvantages: poor documentation

...If you are looking for a fast 30GB hard drive then this is one of the fastest there is. It has UDMA66 support, although now if you can afford it you might as well get one that can support UDMA100. This disk has a high transfer rate and low access time. For the cost this is an extremely good drive. My only gripe with it is there is nothing on the drive outer to show the jumper settings. A small leaflet is supplied with the drive, but if you mislay that it is guess work to decide what jumper to set to make the drive master or slave.... Read review

Advantages: Fast Small and 80GB!

...After getting myself into the whole iMovie and DV camcorder thang, I realised that the tiny hard drive (10 Gb) in my iBook was not enough (1 hour of DV footage takes up 13 Gb), so I started looking for alternatives. As Firewire is the only high speed connection on the laptop, I looked around. Most 30-40Gb Hard drives for Firewire (Also Sony i.Link) were £250, but I saw this one by Maxtor - 80 Gb for under £350. The Box is smaller than I thought, and Graphite and ice to match the iBook, but it does come with an ugly and propriety power supply. Very fast was my first reaction. It can stream DV footage without any dropped frames - and thats 5 Mbytes/s. So, unless you are doing pro DV or something really demanding there is no point in buying the 75Gb drives out there that cost over £700 - the extra little bit of speed is really... Read review

Advantages: very cheap for its size, under 30p a GB
Disadvantages: Slower than SATA

...this hard drive is very good value for money at under 30p per gigabyte. its easy to install for anyone who knows at least a little about the inside of computers. i have found that this drive works best as a slave drive (not the drive with the operating system on) and is very reliable at storing masses of data. i have yet to experience a single problem with this drive and i have had it for almost a year now. it doesn't show any noticable performance issues even after it has been on for several days. the amount of data on the drive also doesn't affect it in any noticable way. you don't need to enable anything in the BIOS after instalation. to format the drive go into control panels, then into administrative tools, then computer management, then storage, then disc management. right click on the new drive and format. easy as that....
