I quite enjoy a bit of DIY and I enjoy doing outdoor jobs in the Summer months so I really wasn't too unhappy to realise that it was time to put a bit of wood preserver on my fence. Mind you although I enjoy a bit of DIY I do find painting can be a bit tedious so if I can find a way to make it easier I am always keen to do so.
I had seen the advertisements for Cuprinol Sprayable Shed and Fence Preserver and it sounded like just the product I needed. Cuprinol have an excellent reputation and I have used their products many times and always been very satisfied so off I trotted to my local B&Q for a browse around.
Currently B&Q have an offer of 3 for the price of 2 on the Cuprinol so, as it is £12.98 for a single container (enough for about 5 panels) you can get three for just £25.96 which isn't bad. Of course if you are buying the sprayable preserver you need something to spray it with but, fear not, Cuprinol have just the thing for that as well - the Cuprinol Sprayer which at just £19.98 for the hand sprayer doesn't exactly break the bank. They do have a power sprayer as well but frankly I didn't see the need so I settled for the hand operated pressure sprayer.
To make the job safer in terms of protecting my clothes (and me) I also bought a disposable overall and a face mask - in the hope that the neighbours wouldn't recognise me in that gear!
I picked a dry day when there was very little wind - it goes without saying that if you are going to spray wood preserver around you don't want it carrying in the wind, you want it to go on your fence panel or shed. I also picked a day when there were no cars parked in the vicinity and no neighbours washing on the line (well you can't be too careful can you? and I didn't want to alienate my neighbours even if I was well camouflaged).
The Product ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Cuprinol Sprayable Preserver was a little thicker than I had expected but nevertheless it poured easily into the sprayer. It came out in a fairly fine mist which covered the fence panels well. I selected a dark brown finish (Forest Oak) as that is my preferred look but it does come in a range of colours Autumn Brown, Forest Green, Harvest Brown, Harvest Gold and Rich Cedar.
The product is 'wax enriched' to make it water repellent and it dries very quickly. I found it relatively easy to get an even finish and using the sprayer the whole process was very quick. The manufacturers say that it takes about 4 minutes a panel and I wouldn't argue with that assessment - in fact once you get into the swing of it you can probably better that time. As an added bonus I found it easy to clean the sprayer after use and the product didn't have a strong odour although it did have an aroma which wasn't unpleasant. I gave the fence a single coat and found it covered reasonably well but, as this was the first time this fence had been coated, I do think it might benefit from a second coat although I expect in subsequent years it won't need this.
Would I recommend it? ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Yes I would - in fact in my view this product is so quick and easy to use there really is no excuse to put off painting the fence year after year. Fences do last longer if you take the time to apply a quality wood preservative on a regular basis and with this product it is relatively easy to do.

Quick review of Cuprinol Sprayer
uuumm me thinks the above review was written by a cuprinol emloyee...sounds just too knowledgeable about colours and treatments. Also the same person has written an equally glowing review of the cuprinol hand sprayer.
Anyhow not a bad product but airlocks are a nightmare if you run it out of treatment. The spray pattern can sometimes be poor and you do need to do a quick brush over. At £18 the 5 year Cuprinol Ducksback in 5 litre gold bottles is expensive but got 8 bottles on ebay for £72 delivered. It does use a lot of treatment...more than implied in the above review. I had a tub of Currinol paint-on treatment and this seemed to work fine in the sprayer. ...

Advantages: Makes the job so easy Disadvantages: You do need to put a little effort into pumping up the pressure
I love finding ways to make tedious jobs easier so I was delighted to find the Cuprinol Fence Sprayer in B&Q when I was looking for something to use to treat my fences. This gadget costs just under £20 and allows you to apply a suitable fence preserver with the minimum of fuss and far quicker that using a brush or roller.
When I opened the box I discovered the large green container that you can see in the picture together with a few bits and pieces you need to put together to make the complete unit. It looked a little fiddly but in actual fact it was very easy to assemble and the instruction leaflet they provided in the box was very simple to follow.
The machine is totally hand operated, it is not a powered unit which means once you have assembled it you can use it straight away, you don't need to wait for batteries to charge ...
Advantages: Cheap, effective, quick, reliable, multi-purpose Disadvantages: Needs a blank fence panel for best results.
I bought the similar product from WILKINSONS - their own brand of fence sprayer, which, at £12.99 is considerably cheaper than the Cuprinol version!
When I opened the box, I thought some pieces were missing, but they were all present - INSIDE the main body of the sprayer itself! Assembly is very straightforward and simply requires attaching the TWO filters to the ends of the plastic pipe and then attaching the spray head at one end and the sprayer body at the other - a matter of a minute's work at most.
The sprayer head is non-adjustable, and produces a flat 'fan' of product and the trigger cannot be locked on - otherwise, it is identical to any other sprayer.
NOTE: To avoid making the same mistake as me, do check that the rubber gasket seal under the lid/pump unit is properly seated FIRST, otherwise you will have a messy job re ...
