Unemployment is not the only benefit

Advantages: Might get some cheats to sign off
Disadvantages: Some vulnerable people will suffer; it's a form of social cleansing

Should welfare benefits be capped at £26,000? Sounds like a no brainer doesn't it? Much of the debate I've heard has centred on the dole scrounger. Often second or third generation work shy, these people have made a career of avoiding employment and k ...

Review of Should welfare benefits be capped at £26,000?

The first step towards a fairer welfare system for all.

Advantages: Long overdue. First step towards creating a fairer welfare system.
Disadvantages: Proposed cap is arguably still set too high.

The issue of who should receive help from the state, and how much that financial help should be is an age-old question, which has been poorly handled by consecutive governments going back many years. However the current proposal to cap benefits at £26, ...

Review of Should welfare benefits be capped at £26,000?

Does it go far enough?

Advantages: It's been needed for a long time
Disadvantages: The cap should be set a fair bit lower

To be brutally honest I don’t know how anyone can argue against welfare being capped at £26,000 a year. Personally that is nearly £10,000 more than I am currently earning for working a full time week without tax being deducted, and over £10,000 over when ...

Review of Should welfare benefits be capped at £26,000?

Benefit Cap is not enough to stem the rot

Advantages: Saves money, might incentivise people to moveoff benefits if market and welfare system also reformed
Disadvantages: Higher child and disabled poverty, not good for the vulnerable people

This depends on which side of the table you are. If you are like me slogging the butt out five days a week for a measly sum that even fails to reach the £26000 being debated so hotly as the benefit cap, the matter is an open and shut case – the benefit ...

Review of Should welfare benefits be capped at £26,000?

There is a problem - but this isn't the answer

Advantages: A very popular idea
Disadvantages: Doesn't address the real problem, could be even more expensive

...No, I'm not in favour of a rigid cap on benefits. This is not because I think benefits payments should be unlimited, or that people who go out to work shouldn't get more money than by staying at home. Those ideas are commonsense. I can fully un ...
