Confident Children, Literate for Life

Advantages: a nation of confident children
Disadvantages: takes time

Illiteracy amongst children is a growing problem; that much is obvious. It’s something I care a great deal about, and so when I saw this category, even though it is no longer a current debate, I decided to write a bit about my voluntary work. Because I ca ...

Review of What is the best way to encourage children to read?

I THOUGHT YOU TOLD ME YOU CAN'T READ!!

Advantages: You get to know my ways
Disadvantages: ??

This is a subject I could probably write a book on, a simple book with lots of tips. So I will have to be very selective here. I shall deliberately not use the technical ‘teacher talk’ vocabulary, not because I do not think you will understand it, bu ...

Review of What is the best way to encourage children to read?

A Literate Generation

Advantages: Well, fairly obvious I'd have thought.
Disadvantages: You might have to think laterally!

My son Kieran, aged five, is the proud possessor of the ability to read one hundred and eighteen words. I know because his teacher told me last week. Hoppety skippety jump! I feel rather smug – he hasn't even finished his first term in Year One yet. ...
