Currys are part of the Dixon retail Group which also includes PC World and as such sell pretty much every electrical item you could wish for on a general basis. By this I mean items which you would normally use about the house not specialist items although they do stock some such items. Washing machines to fridges, iPods to Creative Zens, PC's to laptops etc etc the list is endless and although they do tend to be a little more expensive than some retailers they are quite competitive with regard to similar outfits such as Comet. I'm rather partial to a gadget or electrical nik nak so I tend to frequent Currys quite a lot along with other prominent electrical retailers. I have heard many criticise the customer service and indeed the lack of products, but in the two stores which are within my area I have never had even a hint of such happenings. I would say one negative however and that is that typical of large stores the staff do have a tendency to pounce and offer help, I do get the impression that they are prompted to do so by supervisors who are simply trying to increase sales, but it is a practice that is quite common and also quite irritating. With PC's the choice is extensive and there are always a lot of special offers which on the surface at least do appear to actually be quite special indeed.
Today though I'd like to talk about a part of Currys which is seldom heard of and to which in general I do not partake of. Aftercare Service, Warranty extensions, supercover or in this case Whateverhappens. All what I consider to be big cons, extended insurances on products which in general are designed to way outlast the intended warranty options. So why do many people get conned into purchasing such expensive and probably unnecessary insurances. Well in the most part they are talked into them by unscrupulous salesmen who are probably on some king of bonus which depends entirely on the quantity of extended warranties sold.
Three years ago I purchased my computer and against my better judgement ended up with such a policy which at the time I firmly believed I'd never need, since my belief was that the products were well enough made to outlive the warranty, and in most cases this is true. As you will no doubt be aware though there are always exceptions to the rule and you've guessed it, one year ago my PC totally packed up on me and within 4 days I had a new motherboard and hard-drive fitted and a virtually new PC., how glad was I that I'd been conned.
On Sunday my wife was using the computer when the monitor starting making some really strange noises, then it flickered a bit, then multi-coloured lines started running across the screen, and finally with a bang and some rather scary wafts of brown smoke died completely. I thought that I was going to have to purchase a new monitor until I remember my policy. Today with 2 days left on the policy Currys have agreed to take my old monitor away and should it prove un-repairable a new one will be delivered in it's place. So I am left with a dilemma should I be making a large electrical purchase in the future which I inevitably will at some point................by warranty or not.
I have to say that for my initial outlay of £129 for the warranty extension I have been given a virtually new system, and been treated by Currys staff during communications with both respect and courtesy. At NO time was there any question that repairs or exchanges would be a problem and I have been left feeling that for once there is a customer service division that really does care about their customers, now that's gotta be a first. In conjunction with this exemplary service they run another service called The Tech Guys. When my hard-drive was replaced along with my motherboard these guys spent over an hour on the phone with me to get everything just right for the installation of all the software. After a couple of hitches and as I said one hour of typing and listening, my system was back up and as sweet as a nut. In a very polite and caring the manner the guy on the other end of the phone gave me his internal number to phone should i have any hiccups.
So should you be buying a largish electrical item from Currys remember what I have just written and let it guide you towards your decision.
Advantages: Fairly cheap Disadvantages: Customer service
...of the new adverts for Currys at the moment: they're on every couple of adverts it seems! I must admit that the prices they are advertising their merchandise for seems to good to be true. A washing machine can be bought for around £170 which seems quite a bargain even to a student like me! It would, however, seem that the Kittybrewster retail park store in Aberdeen have mistaken price cuts for cuts in customer service as well.
I have worked a great ... ...a concept lost on the Currys staff.
After a good 10 minutes of hanging around the fridge-freezers, feeling a bit silly, I was approached by a man in a blue shirt. Some of the workers wear yellow and some wear blue. I managed to deduce, during my 10 minute wait, that the blue-shirted people were higher up than the yellow-shirted ones. This was not apparent from the service I received. I was greeted by a grunt and a nod which I took as his way of ...

Advantages: Good selection, good prices Disadvantages: Strange staff
We have a huge Currys in our town; it’s on one of the big retail parks and stays open till late every night stocking everything of an electrical nature that your heart could possible desire. Including bread machines. Which is why one Saturday afternoon found me dragging a reluctant husband and his even more reluctant wallet into the delights of our Currys superstore to check out the breadmakers. I’d been so impressed with a friend’s ... ...and Currys seemed just the place to find it!
I’d been warned by others not to expect too much from the staff, and other Ciao ops seemed to support that, but I was prepared to be fair and give them a chance to prove themselves as polite, helpful and knowledgeable sales folk. In Currys favour, they DID have a really wide range to offer and we were spoilt for choice. Just about every budget was catered for with the smaller machines starting at ...

Advantages: PLenty of stock, good display Disadvantages: Very poor customer service, over priced.
I have refused to buy a single thing from the Dixon group of stores ever again. Every time I have made a purchase from one of these shops and returned with the product I have been stone walled by unhelpful staff.
The last incident I did not even get as for as making a purchase before having a problem with two members of staff at the Macclesfield branch on Wednesday 13th June. My Fiancé and I are looking to replace our leaking washing machine and ... ...to the Curry’s store at Lyme Green, Macclesfield to take a look. We found a Dyson on a display and wanted some info on this and other large capacity machines, so we looked about for a sales assistant. Why is it if you don’t want any assistance you get hassled but when you do they scarper. I went to the till point and asked a sales assistant politely (who didn’t appear to be busy) if he could give us some help in the washing machine ...

This is an account of my experience with the Curry's Whatever Happens product support service.
When I move back to university this Saturday, I am moving into really cramped halls of residence, and so I decided to purchase a laptop so that I won't have to have my huge desktop pc taking up every last inch of space in my room. I trotted to Curry's (Digital) in order to have a look and see what was on offer. I went once with my boyfriend, as a geek's ... ...that she could have a look. It's a Packard Bell R193, s'alright, 50gb, widescreen, blah de blah….I'm not writing about the laptop, I'm here to tell you about the service.
On my first visit to the shop the laptop had been out on display, but on my second visit it wasn't, so I asked the nice friendly man to show one to Mum and I. He naturally smirked when she asked a barrage of stupid questions, "what about battery life? Does it take AAs?"- that kind ...

=====+++++ FINAL UPDATE +++++=====
Currys Customer (lack of) Service is adamant that they will under no circumstances pay any compensation for the out of pocket expense I incurred in pursuing my consumer rights, as they are “unable to quantify the amount”. To pursue the point any further would be just throwing good time and money after bad so I will put it down to experience and NEVER venture through their portals again.

2.45pm I arrive at Currys armed with receipt of removal, sales receipt, credit card and a determined look on my face and in coat pocket, tabard for possible use and a slip of paper noting the URL and path to this opinion ready to give to the manager should he approach.
Manager walks past and looks straight through me. I await my turn at Customer Services. Manager walks past again and ignores me. I wait. Manager walks past for the third ...

Advantages: Will home deliver Disadvantages: Where do I start
I was getting my kitchen decorated and decided to buy a new washing machine and cooker. I purchased the cooker from a different retailer who were perfect from point of contact to instalation of the cooker and will return. Currys on the other hand well they were the exact opposite.
It was August 2001 when I went into my local currys to look at washing machines after careful cosideration I decided to purchase a Hotpiont washing machine. The staff in the shop were helpful to a certain extent. I was buying the washing machine for the first time as the others were all second hand. I paid £219.99 for it, and thought that the salesperson(con-artist) could have been a bit more welcoming. It was a case of in and out -thanks i've got your money now go away.
I was asked if i would need it plumbed in, as my husband works and is not 100 ...

If good old fashioned customer service is what you're after DON'T GO TO CURRYS!
Let's start at the beginning. In 1999 I went into Currys with the intention of buying a laptop computer. My first mistake was going in at 5:30pm, clearly everybody in the shop was in a desperate rush to leave and I stood for some time until I received any assistance after asking the "supervisor". I looked at the rather limited range of laptops but decided that they had one that fitted my requirements, so I decided to purchase it. Whilst paying for it I casually asked what software it came with. The salesman then replied with "doesn't come with any mate"? What? No software on a pc costing £900? Strange. It's then pointed out to me that if I want software (obviously I do) I'll have to pay £1200 for another model. I ask to see this "new" model as it isn ...

Curry's Electrical Store.
----------------------------------------
This review is of Curry's Electrical Store, Unit 3, Harlech Retail Park, Cardiff Road, Newport. (Branch Number 2230)
About Curry's
---------------------
Curry's is a large retailer, which offers a good selection of electrical and household appliances to the public. They regularly have discount and sales in store. They also offer and online shopping facility, plus the option to check stock and reserve items for in store collection. The online shopping facility does offer a deliver service however; there is a charge for this service.
