This book was a present to my daughter from her teacher on the last day of Primary 1.
Cushie Butterfield is a cow who is feeling rather sickly, far too sick for school! Everyone can see how sick she is as she lies on her bed. It's Monday morning and she has huge red spots all over her face…..Tuesday morning and her face is covered in Green checks….and so on and on with different "illnesses" until she gets Saturday morning and suddenly feels much better and off she goes out to play. Then Monday morning comes around and she is feeling sick again….and gets the day off school….Mummy cow decides to clean under he bed that night and found some…………FACE PAINTS!
The way this story is written is superb, the first page of dialogue has Cushie lying in bed saying
"I'm not well" said Cushie Butterfield on Monday morning (a school day)
and has a picture of Cushie lying in bed with the spots all over her face.
The second page is written in much bigger font, "SICK" said her mummy. With a picture of her mummy looking so shocked that she dropped Cushie's breakfast!
The rest of the book follows this same pattern, but with an extra person added each day ie mum and dad on Tuesday, the Next door neighbour on Wednesday and so on….
Each day Cushie describes herself as having different illness such as "under the weather" or "having the collywobbles"
The Illustrations in this book are wonderful, very simplistic in style but effective, there is no background to detract from the story and each double page is a different colour. My daughter had fun describing the cows on each page as that must be the doctor because he has a doctors bag….little things that children notice!
Cushie Butterfield is a wonderful little fun book for children, It teaches them that if they tell lies about being ill then they will eventually get found out. But most of all it is just a funny story that younger children will love. My daughter is 5 years old and thought it brilliant and even asked for a set of face paints the little minx!
The author Colin McNaughton wrote and illustrated this book himself and has written and had published over 60 children's story books. A lot of those he illustrated himself too. Not only an established writer of stories but he is also a humorous poet whose greatest influences are the comic books from his childhood.
This book is the second one featuring Cushie, the first one called What Now? Cushie Butterfield.
I came across this song whilst searching for information on the internet about the author and book….not sure if this is where McNaughton got his name for the book?
SONG
I's a broken hearted keelman and I's overhead in love With a young lass in Gateshead and I call her my dove. Her name is Cushie Butterfield and she sells yellow clay And her cousin is a muckman and they call him Tom Grey.
Chorus: She's a big lass and a bonny lass and she likes her beer, And they call her Cushie Butterfield and I wish she was here.

Advantages: Great illustrations with an amusing story Disadvantages: It might give your kids some ideas
...a cheeky little cow called Cushie Butterfield. There is also the follow up book called What Now Cushie Butterfield and you can read about that one in my other review.
Colin McNaughton has written many books but is probably most well known for his character, Preston Pig who stars in a great number of books.
***The Story***
The story starts with Cushie lying in bed covered in red blotches, with a sneaky grin on her face.
"'I'm not well,' said Cushie ... ...Each page after that features Cushie telling someone that she is not well using the same format. Each of these days is a school day and she has checks, stripes, stars or zig zag lines on her face, every day a different colour.
On Saturday morning Cushie has a remarkable recovery and is able to go out to play. She feels the same on Sunday morning too and goes off to play football with her Uncle Billy.
But then on Monday,
"'Sick!' said Cushie Butterfield ...

Advantages: Children and their parents can relate to this one. Disadvantages: Might encourage children to deliberately annoy their poor parents
...First of all I have to thank Michelle (missy0303) for bringing this character to my attention in her review of the first book. It's thanks to reading it that this book stood out to me when I was at the library and this time it was me who picked it up for my son.
***Background***
This book is the follow up to CushieButterfield (She's a littlecow). Written and illustrated by ColinMcNaughton, this reminds every parent of their worst nightmare - the question phase. ColinMcNaughton has written many books but is probably most well known for his character, Preston Pig who stars in a great number of books.
***The Story***
The story starts with CushieButterfield asking her stressed out mother, a question as she is taking the washing off the clothesline.
"'Who? Who? Who? Who? Who? Who?' said CushieButterfield."
She then...
