Cyrix Cyrix III 550 MHz processor

Advantages: Cheap, respectable looking clockspeeds
Disadvantages: Blown away by the old Joshua design, nearly equalled by the MII at half the clock speed, bad benchmarks, bad press

...The VIACyrix III has proved to be a bit of a dissapointment although it wasnt always this way. Id readied myself since Christmas to get one of these. Up until recently the CyrixIII was based on the Joshua core from Cyrix. This was reasonably quick for the area that it was aimed at. It had a stonking great 64k L1 and 256k L2 cache with 3DNow! and was to be released at PR ratings of between 433 and 566 and be expected to ratchet up to around PR700-800 depending on how far the core could be pushed. However not long before relesase VIA chose to use the Winchip 4 core from Centaur and to be frank this core doesnt have a patch on Joshua, in fact its crap. The benchmarks have come out and based on the benchmarks I saw, comparing the NewCyrixIII-533 and the NewCyrixIII-666 and the Cyrix MII-333 and the JoshuaCyrixIII-PR433 the new Centaur core... Advantages: High speed low cost.
Disadvantages: NEED cpu fan to run properly

...Many people reckon that Cyrix are not good chips, I beg to differ. I have been a religious user of Cyrix since my first computer, and that is the way things are going to stay. The only thing that may be a problem when using a cyrix chip is the heat that the early models generate. With some chips its doesn't really matter if you have a cpu fan, even though its advised. With cyrix, it is ESSENTIAL. The chips are slightly overclocked when they come out of the factory, and although this gives great speed to cost ratio, it leaves them running slightly hotter than other chips of the same speed. If your case is ventilated and you have a cpu fan, they are fine. They have also just released the mark III chips, which i believe run up to a 550 mhz. Check it out!... Read review

Advantages: Lower Temperature
Disadvantages: Slower speed and a reduced performance

...Being a long time user of both Cyrix and AMD processors and also in the making of friends computers, i have generally found Cyrix chips to be totally outclassed by AMD. The main reason for the dislike of Cyrix chips is that they sacrifice floating point processor as well as a lot of memmory to enhance the chip running at a slower 'actual speed' Many people point out that the Cyrix chips allways seem to have a lower actual speed than what it says on the ship. For instance, on your startup CMOS screen you will see such things as cyrix 300 M II running at 266Mhz. This leaves the chip to be very unstable as well as a harsh reduction in performance. The only advantage that i can give to Cyrix is that it runs at a lower temperature and voltage. Otherwise - with the prices being very similar - i would always reccomend buting an AMD....
