I was very grateful for my friends' help as I had never encountered the horrible painful infection of Cystitis before and I thought I was doomed to a visit to the doctors with some horrible illness!

As instructed I mixed one sachet of granules in a glass of cold water, and stirred until the granules dissolved. The water turned pink. I really didn't like the taste, yes there was a slight cranberry flavour, but it didn't hide the bitterness of the potion, but I didn't give up.

I had a wonderful holiday in Cyprus, arriving back very early on Sunday morning. Monday morning, Oh dear what was wrong - I had a burning stinging sensation when passing water and the urge to keep visiting the loo, it was very painful. As the day went on it got worse and worse, more painful and more painful. My best friend range me up in the afternoon to see how my holiday went and I told her my symptons. Within a quarter of an hour she was on my doorstep (she lives very near) with a packet of CYSTOPURIN from the Chemist.

"CYSTOPURIN is a low-sodium 48 hour treatment for the symptons of cystitis. Each pack contains 6 sachets which should be mixed with water to make cranberry flavour drinks. It works by counteracting the acidity of your urine, helping to relieve the burning, stinging pain on passing water."
As instructed I mixed one sachet of granules in a glass of cold water, and stirred until the granules dissolved. The water turned pink. I really didn't like the taste, yes there was a slight cranberry flavour, but it didn't hide the bitterness of the potion, but I didn't give up.
During the day I used two more sachets as advised, but this time I only added a very small amount of water so I could drink it in a couple of gulps (that was better!). By the time it came for the third sachet the burning and stinging had eased quite a lot and I had a good night's sleep. In the morning I gingerly went to the toilet and to my delight found that the discomfort had almost gone.
The Directions for use say that all six sachets must be taken to complete the course of treatment, so I did as I was told and by the end of the second day it had cleared up altogether.
I didn't realise that Cystitis will occur in 4 out of 5 women at least once in their lifetime. Apparently, reading the leaflet which came with the CYSTOPURIN, this is a distressing condition caused by an infection and/or inflammation of the bladder. There are two types of Cystitis, Bacterial, which is caused by bacteria, left after a bowel movement, reaching the bladder, sexual intercourse or be due to ineffective/infrequent hygiene.
The other is Non-bacterial cystitis which can be caused by a number of triggers includng certain soaps, deodorants, insufficient water-based liquid intake or even tight trousers.
Each sachet of granules contains 3g Potassium Citrate B.P., added sweeteners: Aspartame and mannitol. and low sodium
Conclusion =========
I was very impressed with CYSTOPURIN. It was "fairly "pleasant to take, it eased the discomfort quickly and within the 48 hours the Cystitis had completely disappeared.
It was quite expensive at £4.35 for the 48 hour course, but worth every penny.
Advantages: Easily available without prescription Disadvantages: None
...the beginnings of Cystitis twinges, Cystopurin helps in easing the discomfort and makes things more bearable. It is fairly pleasant to take, but it is also important that ones fluid intake is increased in order to try make the urine less strong. If you suspect that there is an infection present then it is important to go to your GP with a urnine sample for testing, in order that the appropriate antibiotic can be prescribed. Cystopurin makes you feel ...

Advantages: Good at easing discomfort Disadvantages: Doesn't clear infection directly
...mum used to swear by Cystopurin for when she had cystits (urinary tract infection/UTI), but I wonder if she was using it appropriately?
Cystopurin contains 30% potassium citrate, which is designed to alkalinise the urine (i.e. decrease the acidity of the urine) so as typically to make passing water less uncomfortable.
However, I think she should have gone to her GP and had her urine tested properly for infection. If infection were present she would ... ...to clear the problem. Cystopurin is unlikely to have done any harm alone, but may not have cleared the problem directly, even if it did make pee'ing a little less uncomfortable.
Cystopurin is also used in chronic urinary tract infection, where repeated antibiotic treatment is unsuccesful or positive culture of organisms unsuccesful, which can be helpful for some ladies. ...
