DEC Alpha 21264 533 MHz processor

Advantages: Easy way to upgrade and overclock
Disadvantages: Some extra heat

...I have recently purchased a 533MHz Intel® Celeron™ (S370). I also have a SLOTEK mine is MSI MS6905 Master ver 1.1 The sloket makes it possible to plug the celeron chip into a SLOT1 Motherboard. My motherboard is the ABIT VT6X4. The ABIT Motherboard has a softmenu setup which is great for overclocking. Now to overclock this processor. Well first of all this processor is locked at 8 times the system clock. So 8 times 66Mhz gives 533. With the ABIT Motherboard and sofmenu you select USER SETUP and start changing parameters. As soon as you change the clock multiplier to anything but 8 times the configuration would default to the 533 * 8 settings. The Multiplier is locked at 8 times. So what we can do is change the processor speed from 66Mhz to something else. I tried 75Mhz and 83Mhz. 75Mhz worked fine (giving a 600Mhz overall speed... Read review

...I have mixed experiences with these processors, In comparison to AMD's chips, Im afraid Celeron processors do not compare. My AMD K6-2/450 which worked without fault, was sold and replaced with a Celeron 533Mhz which at the time was of similar cost. Celeron processors were at the time rated quite highly however in comparison to AMD's 450, Graphical benchmarks, Gameplay, High Quality Video files, processor benchmarks all showed a great deal of a decrease in performance with the celeron. The Celeron runs on a 66mhz bus speed which greatly reduces performance in comparison to processors running at 100mhz bus. Celeron processors are known for thier ability to be overclocked which can greatly improve performance however this greatly dependant on which mainboard you choose. ...Processor Is Fairly Fast, But Over Heating , Even With Original Intel Cooling Is A Regular Problem. It Don't Seem To Work Well With My MSI NEO2 Motherboard. The Huge Cooling Fan Makes A Lot Of Noise And Vibration. After Changing The Thermal Gel The Vibration Is Lot Less Now. But Every Time I Put Up A Huge Processing Task The Processor Fan Speeds Up And The Vibration Returns. My 533MHz DDR2 RAM Works Fairly Well With The Processor. The Motherboard Though Support 667MHz RAM As Well. I Have Tested Once With A 667MHz 512MB RAM And The Performance Boost Is Quite Insignificant. Have Put It Through A Mega Processing Task. I Put That Exact Task on A PIII 800MHz With Same Amount of RAM and The Required Time For The Later Was A Multiple of 6(almost). The Duel Core Really Works.... Read review
