This device really does save a lot of time and effort in the case of the Dell Latitude L400.

Having no built-in drives, booting from CD is impossible without an IDE connection, as the BIOS in this system is too old to boot from a USB CDROM drive in my experience.

Usually I had to connect the main hard disk to a USB-to-2.5" hard drive connector, copy the Windows 98 boot disk files across from a floppy diskette, and then the entire contents of the Windows 2000 Setup CD. What a pain that is!

With this, I plugged the unit in and it worked first time. I booted off the CD as if it was an internal drive, and had a seamless Windows installation! It was so nice having the installation take 30 minutes, not the best part of an afternoon.

If you have the L400, this will deifintely save a lot of time and effort, just don't hot-plug it like I tried to. Windows locked up completely, meaning a reboot and a loss of the work that was currently open.
