Mr F and I visited DFS after several months of nagging, by myself concerning the purchase of a new suite.

We have had our old suite going on seven years now and after many hours of torment unleashed by Charlotte it was looking decidedly worn!

There seem to be new DFS stores popping up all over the place, along with plenty of advertising in the National press we decided to pay a visit.

The store we visited is a new one in Small Heath, Birmingham. It is quite large and with massive windows provides a large airy space to show off plenty of suites. The suites are displayed in no particular order with both leather and material side by side, and there is a very good selection to suit all tastes and budgets

One major plus concerning this store is the staff - no pouncing on you as you walk in the door, no furtive following as you walk around. In fact we had to go looking for a member of staff when we had decided on the suite we wanted.

It is important to 'road test' a suite before you decide to buy. Lie down on it, can you stretch out? Does the arms feel comfortable? Sit or lie in your favourite position (steady) are you comfortable?? Just remember a suite is for life not just for christmas so you need to make sure you can 'chill out' on it!

The suite we had decided on was a loose cover design costing £999. The best part was that you get a free set of covers worth £500. This seemed a brilliant deal because with one child and one baby, one set could be kept for mucky fingers and one set could be kept for best (just in case the Queen decided to pop round for a cuppa!). The covers were also washable at 40 degrees which saves the hassle and expense of having the suite cleaned professionally.

So the salesman was called over and we sat down. I explained that the washable covers were a godsend what with having children, he then replied that it was no good washing them as the marks would never come out! What we needed was to have the covers scotch guarded at £300 per set of covers. After a small tussle between myself and the bloke concerning goods description act etc etc I conceded, ok maybe scotch guarding would help remove the stains. I was mildly annoyed but hey I was getting a new suite so we carried on.

Next we had to choose what type of feet we required for the suite. A board was brought out showing the different sorts - gliders, casters, static, anti carpet marking, hard floor feet etc etc. So we choose a set and were told that they were £15 each - a bit of mental arithmatic later and that was another £180.

Suddenly Mr F went pale, I thought he had been quiet, but all along he had been adding up these 'extras', The bargain £999 suite with a set of 'free' covers was now £1789 and that was without delivery. My husband asked the salesperson why these extras hadn't been shown on the price tag. The bloke replied that they were optional! I replied that a suite without feet wasn't really on and to be fair he did redden slightly!

We decided against the suite in the end. DFS need to realise that people can add up and that advertising goods at one price when they really cost another is somewhat illegal. I have a flyer for them in front of me and nowhere does it mention feet cost extra. What happens if the feet are part of the design? Are they sawn off until you pay up? Be very careful, they're prices can look very attractive especially the 'sale' ones but do they really add up?

I'm so glad I've just read this. I'm looking to buy a new 3 piece suite soon and automatically thought of DFS because of the 4 years interest free credit, but I shall be aware. Ang.

I can't stand the way companies can get away with misleading you over price, although I think you're being a bit harsh with DFS over your suite. £600 of the price difference was becasue you wanted scotch-guard, useful but not exactly standard and hardly DFS's fault you wanted this extra. Still, bloomin' annoying to have to pay extra for feet, which are an essential item for a sofa. One day trading standards will crack doen on this sort of activity, one day!!!!

This comes as no surprise to me. If something looks too good to be true - it normally is! :O)
