Alba DVD 62 - You get what you pay for...
Advantages: Cheap, small, easy to use Disadvantages: Over time stops playing recorded discs
I purchased a Alba DVD62XI from Argos about a year ago as I wanted a cheap DVD player than played recorded DVDs. This is the cheapest I could find (based on other reviews that it played copied discs).
The DVD player worked fine for about 3 or 4 months before I started having issues. After that time the DVD player began skipping and lost the ability to read recorded discs. Nothing had happened in that time (The player had not been dropped or even ... ...to why it happened. I know someone else who has the exact same player and they have had the same issues, although it took a little bit longer to happen.
In conclusion - The DVD player is still playing normal DVD's now (2 years down the line), but If you are looking for a cheap DVD player that plays recorded discs (as I was), spend a little bit more. I eventually ended up paying £25ish for a Panasonic DVD player (not sure of model) and this does ...

It's a DVD player...it plays DVDS.
Advantages: Looks nice, plays DVDs, good price Disadvantages: Whirrs when it plays
...players.
I chose this Alba DVD Player DS-5711 because it was £22.99, but wasn’t the most basic one on offer – I decided to splash out and not go for the cheapest. I’ve had Alba products before, and although they tend to be at the lower end of the market I’ve always been happy with them.
In theory, the DVD player is very easy to set up. Me being me, I managed to make a bit of a meal of it – because I hadn’t realised that one of the scart sockets ... ...keep electrical items until they literally fall apart, can you tell?), so I thought that the player wasn’t compatible with my rather old TV until I had the brainwave of unplugging my digibox and trying the player in that scart socket. To get the DVD player hooked up, all you need to do is plug it into a plug socket and plug it into a scart socket on the TV – there are other ways of connecting it to a TV but this will be the most use. The Alba 108 DVD Player is not to go a miss.
Advantages: Great Price, Lovely sound and picture and very reliable Disadvantages: only comes in one colour (Silver)
...Jpeg files.
Alba 108 DVD player is also compatible with Dolby Digital, DTS and Kodak Picture CD's.
The Remote Controler for the Alba 108 is very compact and slimline wich gives it a good grip and makes it very lite.
I myself have a Alba 108 and have tryed other DVD players before but have found the Alba 108 to Best around for it's price.
I have found the Alba 108 to be so up to scratch that i conviced my parents to go and take back there DVD ...

Bad experience with Alba DVD player.
Advantages: Cheap. Disadvantages: Unreliable.
I recenty gave up the fight to resist investing in new technology and bought a DVD player.
It worked fine and was easy to operate. It even played DVD's from other regions, once I found a code on the internet to unlock it.
However, after watching three DVD's it refused to play the fourth.
To be fair, it was a free DVD given away with the Sunday Times that may have been faulty. Anyway, the problem reported on screen was that the DVD was the 'wrong ... ...regions brought up the same error message until all the regions had been exhausted.
I tried another bona fide DVD that had previously worked and still got the same error message.
So, after three DVD's it gave up the ghost and is now languishing in the dustbin as it is cheaper and less hassle to just buy another player (they are now under £20 at Asda). ...

Cheap 'n' very cheerful
Advantages: Excellent value for money Disadvantages: No stand-by
...surprised to see the word ALBA on the side and after questioning this; I was informed that the ALBA and BUSH machines were in fact identical. Not overly fussed about the manufacturer, I accepted this and was now in possession of an ALBA DVD165.
The Look
¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
Okay, so this machine was never going to be as stunning looking as some of the high end players with there transparent perspex fronts, and strips of shiny aluminium, but for a machine ... ...out of light weight plastic, the machine feels sturdy enough, but I would not be over keen of stacking anything on it. The width and depth of the machine is pretty standard, but at under 5cm in height it is, in my opinion, very slim and unobtrusive. The body of the machine is silver in colour with a black strip across the front. On the left of this is the power button and the display panel, which when the machine is on shows up as blue. The disc ...
