Don't all DVD player pictures look the same
Review of Hitachi DV-P 305 by dnh9

Advantages: What you get for the price.
Disadvantages: Not multi-region(?) - if that matters to you.

...cheapest one there, and the Hitachi had a nice silvery look to it. It cost me £199 on 26 Jan 01. It supports VideoCD and CD as well as DVD. I played a compact disc, and it sounded fine to me through my TV's nicam stereo speakers. I like the handset. It has straightforward buttons for navigation, rather than one of those fiddly joysticks I've tried elsewhere. The player has options for zoom (x2 and x4) from any of 64 positions over the screen. ...
...in the DVD world the scart (RGB) lead gave a noticeably better picture than the S-video one. It even said so in the manual, so it isn't just me. I don't know if this is true generally, or just for Hitachi models. Overall a very satisfactory purchase. ... Read review

Metal Coloured Life Enhancer
Review of Hitachi DV-PF 3 E by imogen49

Advantages: Simple to install and use
Disadvantages: small niggles

Two years ago, my partner and I caught up with this area of technology when we realised that DVDs were the new videos. We needed to buy a DVD player for our new DVDs but also a machine that played our extensive collection of videos. So our search centred on a machine that would do both and also would be as simple as possible enough to operate for our poor technophobe minds. Without really any research or recommendation we chose this product. It ...
...polystyrene foam. The latter and the box were soon purloined by the children for their own games. It has a nice look (you can have it in any colour as long as it is grey metal!) and fitted easily on the top of our portable television in the kitchen. There is a fully detailed manual included and the initial set up was easy and straightforward, even for us. The supplied accessories are: a remote control plus two AA batteries and an aerial cable. Initially ... Read review

cheap and cheerfull
Review of Toshiba SD-170 by prosumer

Advantages: good sound, good picture
Disadvantages: remotes rubish. no s-video

This was my previous DVD player that I Had bought to replace my SD 140 that was getting a bit buggy. it`s a nice small cheap player that been a brand name is step up from the £20 chepo players out there. It`s main selling point besides the make is that it offers progressive scan witch means that if you buy some "component" cables and set the player up accordingly you will get the best quality picture that standard definition can supply (providing ...
...LCD`s do) The picture is fairly good with vivid yet natural colours and movement is quite fluid. the main down side is that the picture is`t super sharp but then again this is a budget player so fair do`s The sound is very good for the price in fact I used the player as a backup CD player for my denon hi fi when it wouldn't play ball on some of my CD`s! The remote is a bit dinky and a bit cluttered but the player it`s self is layed out well and ... Read review

I got this for an Amazing £99 (the silver model is £79)witch is good considering It used to cost a penny shy of £200!. forget getting a cheap Upscaling Samsung or Toshiba this is the real deal! the sound is great and it will make a respectable CD player in its own right especially as it can play SACD`s and DVD audio disks. and the Picture though HDMI is great! the only criticism is that the can be some Jagges due to it been an older player. the remote ... Excellent all round DVD player
Review of LG DNX-190 UH by Arboy1971

Advantages: USB, DivX, multi-region
Disadvantages: Periodically loses multi-region, no USB access from remote

Had this player for over a year now and has been brilliant all round. Used remote hack to make multi-region and changed video system from PAL to NTSC (hold Pause until display on player flashes) to stop judder on playback. Has played everything I've thrown at it. It did lose it's multi region setting recently but used remote hack to re-set factory settings and then Zoran file burnt to CD to access region setting menu and now fine again. One drawback ...
...have to press a button on the DVD player to access the USB stick and this can't be done on the remote. Not a major problem though. Has HDMI out which provides better picture quality. Coaxial out for digital sound. Decodes Dolby 5.1 and DTS. As a bonus, it looks pretty sleek too. ... Read review
