Sturdy player, if a little dated.
Review of JVC XV-S 42 by chrisball2000

Advantages: Bargain basement price, reliable all round performance, mpg support
Disadvantages: Only supports region 2, outdated model

Being a bit of an X-Files nut I bought this DVD player two years ago so that I could get the series boxsets that were coming out on DVD. I had been put off buying a DVD player for a while as I wasn't prepared to pay the prices that the top of the range models were going for but I saw this model on the high street for £70 and I decided to take a chance on it. Obviously two years is a long time in the technology world and this model wasn't that new ...
...the range picture quality and sound with all the bells and whistles of a new player then this isn't for you. However if you are on a budget and want a player with decent sound and picture quality then I would recommend this model. It also has a compact design which makes it a good choice if space is at a premium in your living room Over the last two years my DVD collection has expanded and my player has seen some heavy use. In this time it has proved ... Read review

Go Out and Buy It!
Review of JVC XVN33 by missgreat

Advantages: Great Value For Money
Disadvantages: Bit Confusing With The Different Settings

I bought this DVD player just before Christmas for just £70 and it is better than all of my friends DVD players who payed in excess of £150. This DVD has given me no problems and has been the best investment I have made. It plays all the dodgy DVD's from abroad that you can buy for a couple of quid, and the ones you can record at home. the only complaint i can have bout this DVD player is it is a bit confusing at the start but once you get the hang ... Multi region?
Review of Sony DVP-NS 36 by k8_web

Advantages: divx compatible + multi region
Disadvantages: had to do a bit of research to enable full multi region ability

I've been looking for a divx player for a while now, and wanted one with multi region capability also. I eventually bought this dvd player from amazon.co.uk, as it was clearly labelled 'multi region'. Reading the reviews on amazon, some said it was multi region straight out of the box. For me, when putting any other region dvd other than 2, it played in black and white. After a bit of research, and thinking I'd have to fork out more money to get ...
...is multi region, but my tv was not understanding the video format of the region 1 disc. A simple solution I discovered is simply to change the colour settings on the dvd menu (when there is no disc in it) to RGB. Having achieved this, I am now a very happy customer! All region discs now play in full colour, as do divx formats, CD-RW etc. On top of the function, the box is a sleek looking player. Very slim and very pretty. Furthermore I got it for ... hd-dvd get one while you can !!!!
Review of Toshiba HD-E 1 by colin_bradbury

Advantages: as good as blu-ray , extreamly cheap , bargins to be had everywhere
Disadvantages: no longer supported format

..., with the announcement that Toshiba is to withdraw from the hd race for the next format it leaves hd-dvd players in a very poor position in the market place , however do not let this put you off , there is already a great library off hd-dvd discs out there and as there is no region coding on the discs ,this means you can order via eBay direct from use for even more titles , of course the likelihood of new movies coming out on this format are very ...
...and the latest firmware via Toshiba brings it right unto date with picture and sound , if your savvy you can get one of these and a collection of discs for a fraction of the price of a blu-ray player and start enjoying high definition discs , the money you save get be put to one side to but a blu-ray / ps3 when they inevitably come down in price later this year ... Advantages: most popular multimedia formats, upconver, small Compact
Disadvantages: No display on unit

Small Compact, reads most format DVD, Upconver No display on unit (but its on screen if needed) "Overall Im happy with purchase. you cant go wrong with it. The remote is a bit small but works great. I have ordered an HDMI cable and cant wait to see how good the upconvertion is." plays the most popular multimedia formats like DivX, MP3, WMA, JPEG and MPEG-4 clips. Slim, Why have a huge dvd player when you know the guts only take up a small fraction ...
...One HDMI cable is so nice as well. DVDs look great on my 42"" 1080i LCD tv. But setup menu is REALLY slow to respond. No bundled HDMI cable, just a completely useless RCA cable.Weird buttons on the top. I wish they'd just have front buttons so I can stack stuff on it - but I guess it looks cooler. ... Read review
