LG DVX550 dvd player
Advantages: Plays all of my dvd's (XVID, DIVX, shop-bought); Remembers dvd viewing point
Disadvantages: I honestly couldn't find any for a player of this price bracket!

Advantages: You can play DVD and VHS on one machine , Tape TV while watching DVD
