Sturdy player, if a little dated.
Review of JVC XV-S 42 by
chrisball2000
Advantages: Bargain basement price, reliable all round performance, mpg support
Disadvantages: Only supports region 2, outdated model
Being a bit of an X-Files nut I bought this DVD player two years ago so that I could get the series boxsets that were coming out on DVD. I had been put off buying a DVD player for a while as I wasn't prepared to pay the prices that the top of the range models were going for but I saw this model on the high street for £70 and I decided to take a chance on it.
Obviously two years is a long time in the technology world and this model wasn't that new ... ...the range picture quality and sound with all the bells and whistles of a new player then this isn't for you. However if you are on a budget and want a player with decent sound and picture quality then I would recommend this model. It also has a compact design which makes it a good choice if space is at a premium in your living room
Over the last two years my DVD collection has expanded and my player has seen some heavy use. In this time it has proved ...

DVP-3010
Review of Philips DVP3010 by
bolders
Advantages: cheap, supports many file formats, good quality
Disadvantages: slow, slow and again slow
This is quite cheap DVD player (costs ~ 40-50 pounds)
It supports mp3, DVD+/-, divx .... but it does not support WMV and WMA. When you turn it on, it takes ~5 seconds to get ready. When you press OPEN button, it takes extra 2-3 seconds to open tray. Reading a disk may take some seconds. When i tried to watch Fast and Furious DVD, picture quality (on 29 inch crt) was perfect. Noticed no squares, noises
Sound is good too. You can use it instead music ... ...output. Sound is full of low tones. Mid and treble are good as well.
AND, this DVD does not support HD video.
About installation - Nothing difficult. Just connect to your TV with scart and to music centre, if you want extra sound. I think it is so easy to install, that there is only a little necessary to take manual.
In conclusion i can tell that this DVD player is good for mid-range families, for those who dont like to spend much money. If you ...

barginous Alba dvd player
Review of Alba DVD65 by
lauzjp
Advantages: cheap, multi-region dvd player!
Disadvantages: quite hard to find nowadays
...your nose up at the Alba DVD65, only now seemingly spotted in post offices, and sale rails of any random shop - but this is one of the best dvd players I've bought! so much so, that I actually have two of them. It does play dvd's from all regions, plays cd's, pre-recorded and ones you've done yourself, I forget what all the technical hoo-hah is for it, I'm sure you can look it up on here somewhere... lol. It really is a brilliant quality player - ... ...ntsc tv or not.
There aren't too many buttons on the remote control, and it's so easy to operate even my mum could do it. It is particularly compact, and rather stylish. It doesn't have a display on the player itself, but you don't actually need it. ...

Multi region?
Review of Sony DVP-NS 36 by
k8_web
Advantages: divx compatible + multi region
Disadvantages: had to do a bit of research to enable full multi region ability
I've been looking for a divx player for a while now, and wanted one with multi region capability also. I eventually bought this dvd player from amazon.co.uk, as it was clearly labelled 'multi region'.
Reading the reviews on amazon, some said it was multi region straight out of the box. For me, when putting any other region dvd other than 2, it played in black and white. After a bit of research, and thinking I'd have to fork out more money to get ... ...is multi region, but my tv was not understanding the video format of the region 1 disc. A simple solution I discovered is simply to change the colour settings on the dvd menu (when there is no disc in it) to RGB.
Having achieved this, I am now a very happy customer! All region discs now play in full colour, as do divx formats, CD-RW etc.
On top of the function, the box is a sleek looking player. Very slim and very pretty. Furthermore I got it for ...
