Advantages: most popular multimedia formats, upconver, small Compact
Disadvantages: No display on unit

Small Compact, reads most format DVD, Upconver No display on unit (but its on screen if needed) "Overall Im happy with purchase. you cant go wrong with it. The remote is a bit small but works great. I have ordered an HDMI cable and cant wait to see how good the upconvertion is." plays the most popular multimedia formats like DivX, MP3, WMA, JPEG and MPEG-4 clips. Slim, Why have a huge dvd player when you know the guts only take up a small fraction ...
...One HDMI cable is so nice as well. DVDs look great on my 42"" 1080i LCD tv. But setup menu is REALLY slow to respond. No bundled HDMI cable, just a completely useless RCA cable.Weird buttons on the top. I wish they'd just have front buttons so I can stack stuff on it - but I guess it looks cooler. ... Read review

Multi region?!
Review of Sony DVP-NS 36 by k8_web

Advantages: divx compatible
Disadvantages: had to do a bit of research to enable multi region ability

I've been looking for a divx player for a while now, and wanted one with multi region capability also. I eventually bought this dvd player from amazon.co.uk, as it was clearly labelled 'multi region'. Reading the reviews on amazon, some said it was multi region straight out of the box. For me, when putting any other region dvd other than 2, it played in black and white. After a bit of research, and thinking I'd have to fork out more money to get ...
...is multi region, but my tv was not understanding the video format of the region 1 disc. A simple solution I discovered is simply to change the colour settings on the dvd menu (when there is no disc in it) to RGB. Having achieved this, I am now a very happy customer! All region discs now play in full colour, as do divx formats, CD-RW etc. On top of the function, the box is a sleek looking player. Very slim and very pretty. I got it for a fantastic ... Great upscaling DVD player - worth a look
Review of Samsung DVD-1080 P 7 by ecvlq

Advantages: Functionality, price, playback options
Disadvantages: Nil

Great DVD player. Plays mpeg/avi files straight from data CD/DVDs. Sound quality and video quality both well above average for the price. The palyer is so simple to install - 3 mins from out of the box to up and running. Once playing the controls both on the unit and on the remote are very intuitive. Inserting a data disc into the player will bring up a menu of all playable files. I have not yet be able to use the up scaling HD technology as I ... Read review

Review of Philips DVP 5980 by AJRAD

Advantages: good image, high definition (1080p), good sound, easy use
Disadvantages: no Real Dolby

I was attracted to purchase this DVD player a while ago for its DivX capabilities (something not too many players have). It is a fairly impressive HDMI player, supporting 1080p High Definition resolution pictures. The HD output is flawless and makes for a great movie watching time. After I bought this, I spent a few days just sitting on the sofa watching DVDs with my friends with this player (they were also impressed with the HD). This is still ...
...of the film-watching spree now I will occasionally have a film night with my mates enjoying the high quality and resolution of the DVP 5980. The sound output is also fairly impressive and although it does depend on the audio capabilities of the TV you're using, having a DVD player that also has high calibre audio helps too. It doesn't have Real Dolby though, which is a shame and is also why this product does not get five stars from me. But then ... Read review

Review of Philips DVP 5960 by mike999g

Advantages: price, upscaling option, impressive playback features
Disadvantages: remote a bit fiddly

...an attractive price tag the Philips DVP 5960 boasts a range of features you would expect from a player twice the price. Once connected via a HDMI(High Definition Multimedia Interface) cable you have the option to select the picture resolution or use the automatic setting which will do the job for you, resulting pictures from standard DVD's are noticebaly sharper and colours more vibrant. You will need a HD ready TV to benefit and a large flat screen ...
...The device is multi-region enabled and In addition to playing most DVD types(DVD+R/W DVD-R/W) you also have the option of playing back DIVX encoded movies which can be burnt to a recordable DVD or stored on a USB drive, which is useful if you have movies on your PC allowing them to be quickly transferred to the player. Photos in high definition JPEG format can be viewed via your TV if you need to and it has the option to play MP3's. The unit itself ... Read review
