Multi region?
Review of Sony DVP-NS 36 by k8_web

Advantages: divx compatible + multi region
Disadvantages: had to do a bit of research to enable full multi region ability

I've been looking for a divx player for a while now, and wanted one with multi region capability also. I eventually bought this dvd player from amazon.co.uk, as it was clearly labelled 'multi region'. Reading the reviews on amazon, some said it was multi region straight out of the box. For me, when putting any other region dvd other than 2, it played in black and white. After a bit of research, and thinking I'd have to fork out more money to get ...
...is multi region, but my tv was not understanding the video format of the region 1 disc. A simple solution I discovered is simply to change the colour settings on the dvd menu (when there is no disc in it) to RGB. Having achieved this, I am now a very happy customer! All region discs now play in full colour, as do divx formats, CD-RW etc. On top of the function, the box is a sleek looking player. Very slim and very pretty. Furthermore I got it for ... Review of Philips DVP 5980 by AJRAD

Advantages: good image, high definition (1080p), good sound, easy use
Disadvantages: no Real Dolby

I was attracted to purchase this DVD player a while ago for its DivX capabilities (something not too many players have). It is a fairly impressive HDMI player, supporting 1080p High Definition resolution pictures. The HD output is flawless and makes for a great movie watching time. After I bought this, I spent a few days just sitting on the sofa watching DVDs with my friends with this player (they were also impressed with the HD). This is still ...
...of the film-watching spree now I will occasionally have a film night with my mates enjoying the high quality and resolution of the DVP 5980. The sound output is also fairly impressive and although it does depend on the audio capabilities of the TV you're using, having a DVD player that also has high calibre audio helps too. It doesn't have Real Dolby though, which is a shame and is also why this product does not get five stars from me. But then ... Read review

Philips DVP5960
Review of Philips DVP 5960 by mike999g

Advantages: price, upscaling option, impressive playback features
Disadvantages: remote a bit fiddly

...an attractive price tag the Philips DVP 5960 boasts a range of features you would expect from a player twice the price. Once connected via a HDMI(High Definition Multimedia Interface) cable you have the option to select the picture resolution or use the automatic setting which will do the job for you, resulting pictures from standard DVD's are noticebaly sharper and colours more vibrant. You will need a HD ready TV to benefit and a large flat screen ...
...The device is multi-region enabled and In addition to playing most DVD types(DVD+R/W DVD-R/W) you also have the option of playing back DIVX encoded movies which can be burnt to a recordable DVD or stored on a USB drive, which is useful if you have movies on your PC allowing them to be quickly transferred to the player. Photos in high definition JPEG format can be viewed via your TV if you need to and it has the option to play MP3's. The unit itself ... Read review

A Solid Performer
Review of Pioneer DV 300 by thewhitewolf

Advantages: Stylish, good performance, relatively cheap
Disadvantages: no dolby surround

This is a good, satisfactory dvd player such as you would want for a low price. It's good for the price that it is at so you shouldn't be expecting the world at this price. It's a solid, stylish player that i think does look very good indeed and has the usual list of playable formats e.g. DVD/DVD-R/DVD-RW**/DVD+R, etc. It also plays CDs, VCDs, SVCDs and i can't find fault with any of its functions - it is a very functionable little box. DivX® compatible, ...
...It has virtual surround and this works very well with a few speakers and a subwoofer. It has several functions for convenience that you would expect such as Photo + Music Mix (JPEG Slideshow with Music); advanced GUI; a disc navigator for easy browsing; last (position) memory: 5 (DVD)/1 (VCD); resume function, screen saver, auto power off. And i could go on and on listing all the functions available. Yet i'll leave it that this is a solid performer ... Read review

Get the most from your money
Review of Pioneer DV 530 by neiltom88

Advantages: Excellent quality for a great price
Disadvantages: Nothing for a lower budget player

This DVD player is an excellent buy for anyone wanting a good quality DVD player at a very reasonable price. The price of this player can vary greatly but it is availble for purchase online from www.techtronics.com for £169 plus p+p - coming to a grand total of around £190. It is a silver player with that is reasonable in size and relatively light in weight. It has a nice front display where mode and functions are displayed clearly. The instruction ...
...only a couple of minutes to setup with a scart lead and a very user-friendly on screen menu-setup system. The remote control is easy to use and relatively uncluttered and a very good size - batteries are included. The machine is very quiet which was surprising because most lower-budget DVD players are often quite noisy when they are playing making whirring and vibrating noises. As for picture quality it is superb and I have never had a DVD jump ... Read review
