Maligned but very capable DVD player
Review of Samsung DVD-HD950 by
NomisG
Advantages: Compatability
Disadvantages: slightly clumsy remote
...terms). If you connect the Samsung to a standard def TV, the picture is very good and this is the only fair test.
I don't see any of the other reviews mention picture calibration. If you want to get the best from your DVD player (any DVD player) you MUST calibrate it and the TV together. It is a fairly lengthy process and many/most people don't know about it. But you will never see your HD TV at its true potential until you do.
Back to the Samsung.
... ...good detail.
Another thing is the sound. The Samsung has on-board decoders for Dolby and DTS. It will also play SACD and DVD audio as well as regular CD's, of course. And it does all of this very well.
I love the player and would not hesitate to recommend it. ...

Packard Bell Standalone DivX Player
Review of Packard Bell DVD-DIVX 350 by
kenjin
Advantages: Multi Functional
Disadvantages: Remote control is problematic
...I purchased the Packard Bell DVD-DivX 350 some months ago, and overall I am pleased with my purchase. It’s a full featured box of tricks that plays much more than just DVD’s and DivX format DVD’s. Here is exactly what it will play DVD/SVD/CD-G/XVID/DIVX/WMA/MP3/CD-DA/VOD/ Kodak Picture CD. It also features DTS Dolby 5.1, 6 channels surround sound, parental lock to protect children form unsuitable material, up to 32 subtitles and 8 sound languages, ... ...just lock up with my Packard Bell but play fine on my Philips. But the biggest issue is the remote and searching the internet I found out its not just isolated to me, the remote doesn’t work very well at all. Even with fully charged batteries you find yourself pushing the buttons many times until they respond. Seeing as though nearly all the functions (except for play and stop) have to be controlled by the remote, this can be very frustrating. Some ...

cheap and cheerfull
Review of Toshiba SD-170 by
prosumer
Advantages: good sound, good picture
Disadvantages: remotes rubish. no s-video
This was my previous DVD player that I Had bought to replace my SD 140 that was getting a bit buggy. it`s a nice small cheap player that been a brand name is step up from the £20 chepo players out there.
It`s main selling point besides the make is that it offers progressive scan witch means that if you buy some "component" cables and set the player up accordingly you will get the best quality picture that standard definition can supply (providing ... ...LCD`s do)
The picture is fairly good with vivid yet natural colours and movement is quite fluid. the main down side is that the picture is`t super sharp but then again this is a budget player so fair do`s
The sound is very good for the price in fact I used the player as a backup CD player for my denon hi fi when it wouldn't play ball on some of my CD`s! The remote is a bit dinky and a bit cluttered but the player it`s self is layed out well and ...

prosumer
Advantages: top quaility spec and make
Disadvantages: remote not well thought out. Cant play VCD`s or MP3`s
I got this for an Amazing £99 (the silver model is £79)witch is good considering It used to cost a penny shy of £200!. forget getting a cheap Upscaling Samsung or Toshiba this is the real deal! the sound is great and it will make a respectable CD player in its own right especially as it can play SACD`s and DVD audio disks. and the Picture though HDMI is great! the only criticism is that the can be some Jagges due to it been an older player. the remote ...

Excellent all round DVD player
Review of LG DNX-190 UH by
Arboy1971
Advantages: USB, DivX, multi-region
Disadvantages: Periodically loses multi-region, no USB access from remote
Had this player for over a year now and has been brilliant all round. Used remote hack to make multi-region and changed video system from PAL to NTSC (hold Pause until display on player flashes) to stop judder on playback. Has played everything I've thrown at it. It did lose it's multi region setting recently but used remote hack to re-set factory settings and then Zoran file burnt to CD to access region setting menu and now fine again. One drawback ... ...have to press a button on the DVD player to access the USB stick and this can't be done on the remote. Not a major problem though. Has HDMI out which provides better picture quality. Coaxial out for digital sound. Decodes Dolby 5.1 and DTS. As a bonus, it looks pretty sleek too. ...
