First test was a Lord of the Rings DVD. The picture quality is astounding with HD upscaling. Flawless skin tones, colours. Sharpest image I have ever seen. Truly remarkable considering I only used the quick setup (less than 5 minutes). It does the same to DIVX DVDs and JPEG pictures. I also had some really large photos as I have a DSLR camera and to see some of my pictures so large, ... ...Smartlink feature which is for Sony TVs is a good feature as it means you can hide one remote straight away. It also means if you switch one off the other switches off as well.
The sound is good but is very dependent on the TV or if you use Surround Sound Etc... At the price level you would probably struggle to find a cheaper HD DVD player. If your TV is not HD you have cheaper options. If it is HD then this is a good value for money option until ...

This Samsung 1080p DVD player is the perfect companion for any of the latest Samsung LCD and Plasma TV's. We currently own the Q96 Plasma model and the F1080 fits just under the TV, it is smaller than the stand on the TV. But it has all of the features of the chunkier 1080p dvd players. Another plus to Samsung customers is that it has the Anynet+ function, meaning you can use the tv remote to control the DVD player. This is suggested as the remote ... ...small and useless in my view. There are a few firmware faults with this model, for example it sometimes won't play a DVD on initial startup and you have to restart the player as it just blue screens.
The upscaling quality is good, however I have only my xbox on vga connection to compare it to.
Upscaling quality: 8/10

Menu System: 5/10 (can be annoying at times)

I was attracted to purchase this DVD player a while ago for its DivX capabilities (something not too many players have).
It is a fairly impressive HDMI player, supporting 1080p High Definition resolution pictures. The HD output is flawless and makes for a great movie watching time. After I bought this, I spent a few days just sitting on the sofa watching DVDs with my friends with this player (they were also impressed with the HD).
This is still ... ...of the film-watching spree now I will occasionally have a film night with my mates enjoying the high quality and resolution of the DVP 5980.
The sound output is also fairly impressive and although it does depend on the audio capabilities of the TV you're using, having a DVD player that also has high calibre audio helps too.
It doesn't have Real Dolby though, which is a shame and is also why this product does not get five stars from me.
