Multi-format DVD recorder
Review of Sony RDRGX7 by Judley

Advantages: Multi-format DVD, great looks
Disadvantages: Cost, slow start up, no progressive scan, no mp3, it's big!

I purchased my GX7 to complement my Sky+ system. The idea being that when the hard-disk of Sky+ was approaching capacity, we'd copy the things we wanted to keep onto the GX7. For this, it's been great. Straight forward and the recordings have been of great quality. The machine itself have stacks of features outside this basic use e.g. if you're a Camcorder fan(digi) there's a Dvi input and loads of advanced editing facilities. Unfortuantely I'm not ...
...not had the opportunity to use them. However, in terms of basic set up and use, it's quite simple. Scart from the Sky+ and component to the LCD TV. This gives great picture quality, despite the lack of progressive scan. We use it as our main DVD player without complaints. With the new strain of DVD writers coming along (with built in HD), I'd be hard pushed to recommend this to you unless you're getting a great price (-£250). ... Read review

Liteon LVW5005 DVD Recorder
Review of Liteon LVW5005 by sysop-paul

Advantages: Works with most brands of DVD's - easy to use
Disadvantages: Slow to start up and switch off - noisy running

We have owned this DVD recorder now for nerly a year. Apart from the disadvantages already mentioned, noisy when running and slow to start / stop it has proved to be an excellent machine. We have been able to easily update the firmware by downloading from the internet and it has a very easy to use "Guider" menu, you simply press the Guider button on the remote and are presented with an on-screen choice of options that are a step by step way to record ...
...any brand of DVD as yet that does not work with this recorder, although it did hang up once when a faulty DVD was put in, it had to be switched off at the mains to clear it. The automatic timer is also very easy to set with many differnt options available. ... Read review

Great for its features, not so for the reliability
Review of Liteon HD-A 740 GX by theoldgoat

Advantages: DVD-DL recording, optical output, DVD-R and DVD-+R, lots of features
Disadvantages: DVD drive reliabilty, can't watch and record at same time

I originally bought the Liteon LVW-5045GDL+ model fro Currys Digital a coupld of years ago when they were doing it on promotion for whatever football cup was on. We used it for several months without problems, recording to both the HDD and DVDs, and playing many DVDs - both commercial and home-burned. After about 8 months, the DVD suddenly stopped recognising blank DVDs. I took it back to Currys, who replaced it with the HD-A 740 GX model they ...
...really don't get this as Liteon have a great reputation for their optical drives in PCs! Anyway, aside from this, the 740 is a great DVD recorder - it can record to Dual-layer DVDs, has optical output for home cinema, can be firmware upgraded, and has a pretty decent - if complex - menu system. Avoid using the EP and SLP modes - the picture quality is a bit jagged at times. Some makes of DVDs are simply not recognised, but that's really not big ... Read review
