I brought this DVD player a year ago when moving into a new flat with my partner. It records several DVD formats and can play back DVD's and CD's. It can also be used as a Digital Tuner if the TV does not have its own. I was looking for a DVD player that was going to be most compatible with recording and playback of different disc formats whilst also featuring a digital tuner. I have used it to record onto DVD-RW and DVD+RW with the same high quality ... ...eject that some discs will need finalizing before being used in other players, this is great if like me you would otherwise forget if you'd recorded something for a friend. Other supported formats include: normal CDs (normal audio and mp3s), DVD RAM discs, DVD-R, DVD+R. Some notable formats which are not supported are photo-cd's and DivX video discs. The Sony RDR-HXD995 is a combined DVD and hard disk recorder with built in analogue and freeview tuners with analogue and digital outputs.
It could be seen as providing the same functionality of several ‘set top boxes’ namely a freeview receiver, DVD player/recorder (as well as supporting Audio CD) and a Hard Disk recorder – giving essentially the same functionality as a VCR machine.
The main advantage of such a system is that it greatly simplifies ... ...it work with the proprietary Sony ‘SACD’ format however that isn’t a major shortcoming for many people.
I believe you can also use the system as an audio ‘jukebox’ but you’d have to feed it MP3 files via the USB ports, I don’t think it ‘rips’ standard audio CDs.

this has to be my best DVD player i have ever bought in my life! it has everything i need, massive 320 GB memory for all my recording needs i can record hours and hours of TV shows that i would hate to miss but i can record and a touch of a button. ...choice this time was the LG RHT497H, I purchased this about four weeks ago for a little over £180 and have so far enjoyed using it and the picture quality it serves up is excellent.
I should probably give a mention to the TV I have it attached to before I go much further just so as you know exactly what I am using and then you do not expect the same picture quality from a 14 inch CRT portable. My TV is a Samsung next generation 63 inch crystal plasma ... ...for someone else. The LG RHT497H has a built in freeview tuner but can of course be linked up to Sky or Cable services allowing you to record from those instead, the recorder is also HD so it is capable of recording HD images from the HD channels should you have them, I have recorded Sky Sports in HD and it looks every bit as good played back as it does straight from the live presentation.
